THE MATTHEW EDWARDS QUINTET Saturday, November 7 at 2 P.M. @downhomemusic Down Home Music 10341 San Pablo Avenue El Cerrito, CA https://www.downhomemusic.com/ Matthew Edwards ‘The Small Heath Book of the Dead’ This is Matthew’s second solo record following on the heels of 2024’s ‘Hark’ and his 8th album overall after three fronting The Music Lovers and three with Matthew Edwards and the Unfortunates. All the records have been critically acclaimed (Mojo, Shindig!, Persona etc.) and have resulted in Matthew touring Italy, the UK and France. The latter being the audience that has taken him to their heart. The album was recorded at Stompke Sound and Get Reel in San Francisco CA with additional recording at Expanding Sky in Maine. It was mixed by John Rivers (Felt, Swell Maps) at Woodbine Street Studios in Leamington Spa, England. The album is a love song to the neighborhood he was born and brought up in—1970s Birmingham—the characters, chancers, dreamers, and lovers; the nightclubs; the dreams of escape; and the friends, especially the friends - many of whom are still part of his life. Folk, glam-rock, tropicalia, showtunes – Matthew absorbs them all and has been compared to Robyn Hitchcock, Jake Thackery, Serge Gainsbourg, Richard Thompson and Ray Davies. https://matthewedwardsandtheunfortunates.bandcamp.com/ by @downhomemusic

This autographed, handmade gatefold edition of William Ackerman’s first album was purchased off of the very shelf and counter that Mr. Ackerman built at Down Home in 1976. Fifty years ago, Ackerman’s woodworking company, Windham Hill Builders was hired by Chris to to do some carpentry inside of Down Home Music and the @arhooliefoundation building. Ackerman’s woodworking and music can still be admired today inside the walls of Down Home, as we always have many Windham Hill releases on hand. 1976 was the year that Ackerman started the Windham Hill record label by pressing 300 copies of his first album. To save on cost for the initial pressing, apparently Ackerman pasted his album artwork over extra Arhoolie record covers that Chris gifted to him. It was a treat to see Mr. Ackerman and many other Windham Hill artists perform at The Freight in Berkeley last night. Here are a few photos of the record that Ackerman signed for me, some text taken from his website, and Evie Sands signing her album on the countertop that Ackerman built. MAURICE TANI Saturday, October 24 at 2 P.M. @downhomemusic 10341 San Pablo Avenue El Ceritto, CA https://www.downhomemusic.com/ Maurice Tani is a veteran singer-songwriter and band leader of the Alt-Country - Americana scene. He has released six critically-acclaimed albums of original material over the past dozen years. His two latest, released simultaneously in late 2013 are a new studio album, “Blue Line”, and “Two Stroke”, an album of acoustic duos and trios with bassist Mike Anderson and a variety of others. Born and raised in San Francisco, Maurice Tani was too young for the Summer of Love, but was still profoundly influenced by the California culture that gave the world surf guitar, country rock and psychedelic to the singer songwriter types. Barely into his twenties and hungry for experience, he moved to central Texas to work the hardcore country, blues and rock circuit between Austin and Dallas, playing five sets a night, seven nights a week for months at a time, eventually making connections that led to his moving to New York City just as the punk rock scene of CBGBs and Max's Kansas City was exploding in Lower Manhattan. By 1977 he was back in San Francisco as punk, power pop and new wave was taking hold in the Bay Area and began a stretch of five years and four critically acclaimed albums with ex-Flamin' Groovies front man Roy Loney's band, The Phantom Movers. Through the rest of the '80s and '90s, Maurice was the lead guitarist and a featured vocalist for Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra and Big Bang Beat, two large, 12-18 piece dance bands that gained worldwide exposure from a 2 hour PBS New Years Eve tri-mulcast (2 television stations with different views and FM stereo radio audio all broadcasting simultaneously) that was broadcast annually for many years on public TV around the US and Europe. by @downhomemusic
