Not everyone who disagrees with you is disrespecting you.

Sometimes, they’re simply offering a perspective that challenges your own. But when we become overly attached to being right, even the smallest disagreement can feel like a personal attack.

Here’s the thing: Your opinions are part of who you are. They are not the entirety of who you are.

Emotional maturity means being able to tolerate differences without becoming defensive, dismissive, or hostile.

You can listen without agreeing. You can hold your boundaries without controlling someone else’s perspective. And you can be confident in what you believe while remaining open to learning something new.

Because not every disagreement needs a winner.

💬 Are you comfortable disagreeing with someone without needing to change their mind?

The Angela Rye and Brandi Thee Millennial Manager controversy is about so much more than two women disagreeing about politics.

It’s about political gatekeeping, elitism, and a larger problem I see within establishment Democratic politics.

For years, conservatives have demonstrated a willingness to unapologetically advance sweeping, often highly controversial political agendas. Meanwhile, establishment Democrats continue to face criticism for an approach that can prioritize institutional norms, incrementalism, and political caution over more transformative change.

When grassroots voices challenge that approach, the conversation too often becomes about their credentials rather than the substance of their arguments.

Political expertise matters. But proximity to power doesn’t automatically make someone’s perspective more legitimate than the experiences of the people those policies affect.

There’s a difference between expertise and entitlement.

In my latest ZORA article, I unpack the Angela Rye controversy, the psychology of political gatekeeping, and what these tensions reveal about the future of Democratic leadership.

Democracy was never supposed to be an exclusive club.

Seven days. Seven conversations. One important reminder:

The midterms are personal. 🗳️

For the past week, we’ve explored how public policy intersects with the realities of everyday life.

Women’s health and reproductive rights.
Voter identification laws.
Immigration enforcement.
Childcare and education.
Voting rights after incarceration.
Healthcare funding and economic security.

Different issues. Different communities. Different perspectives.

But one common thread: The decisions made through elections can have consequences that extend far beyond the voting booth.

Today, on Election Day, we’re concluding this series with something just as important as understanding the issues: understanding your rights and the voting process.

What happens if your name isn’t on the voter list?

What if you’re still in line when the polls close?

What assistance is available if you encounter a barrier?

And why aren’t election-night results always final?

These are things worth knowing.

As I’ve said in my latest ZORA article, Your Vote Is Private. Its Consequences Aren’t.

We can respect the privacy of individual ballots while still having thoughtful, informed conversations about political power, public policy, and accountability.

Thank you to everyone who followed along with The Midterms Are Personal this week. ❤️

My hope is that these conversations made complicated issues a little easier to understand.

Know your rights. Understand your choices. Examine the consequences.

Your vote is private. But its consequences aren’t. 🗳️

It’s Election Day. And there’s something I think we need to talk about.

We often hear people say, “Who I vote for is nobody else’s business.”

And they’re right. Your ballot is private. You don’t owe anyone an explanation of how you voted.

But here’s where the conversation gets more complicated.

Voting isn’t simply an expression of personal preference. It’s a decision about who gets to exercise power.

Power over healthcare.
Education.
Reproductive rights.
Immigration.
Economic opportunity.
Civil liberties.

And those decisions have consequences that extend far beyond the individual voter.

We’ve become accustomed to treating political affiliation like a personal identity or a favorite sports team.

But elected officials aren’t just personalities we support. They’re people entrusted with making decisions that affect our institutions, communities, and everyday lives.

And from a psychological perspective, there’s an important distinction between identifying with a political group and critically examining the decisions made by the people who represent it.

Respecting someone’s right to vote doesn’t mean we can’t examine the consequences of the policies they support.

We can respect the privacy of the ballot while still asking difficult questions about political power, public policy, and accountability.

Because ultimately, voting isn’t just about who you like.

It’s about who you empower and what they do with that power.

My latest ZORA article explores this further: Your Vote Is Private. Its Consequences Aren’t.

Do you think we’ve started treating political choices too much like personal preferences?

Why do some women see other women as competition? 👀

And when did another woman’s success become evidence of our own inadequacy?

From an early age, women are often encouraged to compare themselves to one another.

Who’s prettier? Who’s more successful? Who’s getting married? Who’s aging better? Who’s receiving the recognition we wish we had?

And sometimes, those comparisons follow us into adulthood, our friendships, our relationships, and our workplaces.

But here’s what we don’t talk about enough.

Sometimes the scarcity is real.

When women are underrepresented in positions of power, when opportunities are limited, or when recognition feels reserved for a select few, competition can become more intense.

But there’s a difference between recognizing structural inequality and viewing another woman as the enemy.

And psychologically, sometimes another woman’s success activates something unresolved within us. An insecurity. An unmet desire. A fear that we’re falling behind.

You can be ambitious without being threatened. You can want more without wanting less for someone else.

And you can celebrate another woman’s accomplishments without questioning your own value.

Because sometimes the problem isn’t the woman beside you. It’s the system that made you believe there was only room for one.

So here’s my question: Can you genuinely celebrate another woman’s success without comparing it to your own life?

Who pays for your healthcare? And what happens when the funding changes? 🏥💰

DAY 6 OF THE MIDTERMS ARE PERSONAL.

Healthcare isn’t just a medical issue. It’s an economic issue, a public policy issue, and for millions of Americans, a question of financial security.

Tomorrow, November 3, voters in several states will weigh decisions that could affect how healthcare is funded, delivered, and accessed.

Today, we’re breaking down four ballot measures:

📍 South Dakota — Amendment I: Should expanded Medicaid coverage end if the federal government’s funding share falls below 90%?

📍 California — Proposition 40: Should certain billionaires pay a one-time wealth tax, with most of the revenue directed toward healthcare?

📍 California — Proposition 44: Should certain nonprofit community health clinics be required to spend at least 90% of their revenue on healthcare services?

📍 California — Proposition 38: Should California authorize $8.4 billion in bonds to fund immunology and immunotherapy research?

Each proposal presents different questions about access, funding, accountability, and economic tradeoffs.

What does YES actually change? What does NO preserve? And who could be affected?

Because healthcare policy isn’t just about hospitals, insurance companies, or government budgets.

It’s also about the relationship between public resources and people’s everyday lives.

Swipe through for the breakdown.

She was 15. He was 27, and he was a police officer.

So why are we still calling it an affair?

Sandra Birchmore was just a child when, according to federal prosecutors, Matthew Farwell, an officer connected to the police youth program she attended, began sexually abusing her.

Years later, at 23, she was found dead while pregnant.

Farwell is now on trial, accused of killing Sandra and staging her death to appear to be a suicide. He has pleaded not guilty.

But here’s what makes this story even more troubling.

An internal investigation implicated THREE former Stoughton police officers in inappropriate relationships with Sandra.

Testimony during the ongoing trial has raised serious questions about how her death was originally investigated, including an unrecorded interview with Farwell conducted in a school parking lot without notes.

That does not establish a deliberate cover-up. But it raises legitimate questions about accountability, investigative practices, and institutional oversight.

Who protects young people when the individuals entrusted with their safety are accused of exploiting them?

From a psychological standpoint, language matters.

Calling alleged sexual exploitation involving a child an “affair” suggests an equality of power and agency that simply did not exist.

Grooming is not romance.
Exploitation is not an affair.
And authority is not consent.

I unpack this in my latest ZORA article:

“She Was 15. He Was a Cop. Stop Calling It an Affair.”

Should a felony conviction affect someone’s right to vote for the rest of their life?

DAY 5 OF THE MIDTERMS ARE PERSONAL. 🗳️

Tonight, we’re examining voting rights after incarceration—and a proposed constitutional amendment on Virginia’s November 3 ballot.

Virginia’s Question 3 would establish a fundamental right to vote, automatically restore political rights following release from incarceration, and revise the standard for restricting voting rights based on someone’s capacity to understand the act of voting.

But here’s something important: A 2026 federal court ruling has already changed voting eligibility for many Virginians with felony convictions. The proposed amendment would address these rights in the state’s Constitution.

So what does voting YES change?

What does voting NO preserve?

And how do we distinguish legal punishment, civic participation, and the process of returning to society?

Different states have different rules, and the answers are not always as straightforward as people assume.

This carousel examines the law, the proposed changes, and the considerations on both sides.

Because understanding voting rights also means understanding who is eligible to participate in our democracy—and under what circumstances.

Swipe through for the breakdown.

Do you genuinely enjoy being alone, or have your experiences taught you that needing people is dangerous? ❤️

There’s a difference between choosing solitude because you enjoy your own company and choosing isolation because you’ve learned that depending on others often leads to disappointment.

Sometimes independence is a preference.

Other times, it’s protection.

Maybe you’ve been let down too many times. Maybe asking for help came with conditions. Maybe you’ve spent so much of your life being the person everyone depends on that you’ve forgotten what it feels like to depend on someone else.

And somewhere along the way, “I don’t need anybody” became a source of pride.

But here’s the thing: Healthy independence doesn’t require emotional isolation.

You can enjoy your own company and still need connection. You can establish boundaries without shutting everyone out. And you can acknowledge past disappointments without assuming every relationship will end the same way.

Of course, not everyone who enjoys solitude is avoiding vulnerability. Some people genuinely thrive with more time alone.

But it’s worth asking ourselves whether we’re choosing solitude because it brings us peace or because it feels safer than trusting someone again.

You don’t have to abandon your independence to make room for connection.

So I’m curious: Do you love being alone, or have you learned not to expect much from other people?

I recorded this yesterday, sitting in my car while waiting for my daughter, in the middle of a very unexpected emotional moment. ❤️

I went back and forth about whether I wanted to share it.

This one is deeply personal.

I lost my mother when I was just 15 years old and my father when I was 30. While I’ve learned to live with their absence, there are moments when the grief feels just as present as it did all those years ago.

Yesterday, I reached out to someone who was incredibly close to my mother, someone I hadn’t connected with in years. In the middle of that exchange, I found myself speaking to my mom…Out loud.

As if she could hear me.

It brought me back to something my husband and I had recently discussed about heaven, the afterlife, and what happens when we die.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers. But I find so much comfort in believing that my parents are still somewhere watching over me. That they’ve seen the woman I’ve become. That they know my daughters, even though they never got the chance to meet them.

Because the thought that they’re simply gone forever is sometimes more than my heart can bear. 😢

Grief is such a strange thing. You can build a beautiful life, experience tremendous joy, and still find yourself longing for the people who aren’t here to share it with you.

I almost kept this video to myself. But then I thought, maybe someone else has experienced this. Maybe someone else still talks to the people they’ve lost, still looks for signs of their presence, or still finds comfort in believing they’re somewhere listening.

So I’m curious. Do you ever talk to someone you’ve lost? Do you ever hope they can still hear you? ❤️

The cost of raising a family isn’t just a personal financial issue. It’s also a public policy issue.

Welcome to DAY 4 OF THE MIDTERMS ARE PERSONAL. 🗳️

Tonight we’re talking about childcare, education, school meals, and economic security.

Because behind the political headlines are real questions about how families live, what services are available to them, and who pays for those services.

On the November 3 ballot:

📍 California — Proposition 3: Should an existing income tax increase on high earners become permanent to maintain funding for education and other state services?

📍 Marin County, California — Measure P: Should the county establish a parcel tax to fund childcare and early childhood education?

📍 Colorado — Amendment 87: Should the state adopt a graduated income tax and dedicate additional revenue to education, healthcare, and early childhood programs?

📍 North Dakota — Measure 2: Should public schools be constitutionally required to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to students, with state reimbursement?

Each measure presents different choices about funding, affordability, and the role of government.

And understanding those choices means knowing what a YES vote would change and what a NO vote would preserve.

Because family policy is economic policy.

Swipe through for the breakdown.

What financial pressure do you think deserves more attention in conversations about raising a family?

Meghan Markle can’t win. And that’s exactly the problem.

For years, Meghan has been criticized for distancing herself from her father and keeping him away from her children.

She was called cold, ungrateful, and accused of abandoning her family.

Now, as serious allegations against her father emerge, allegations he denies, the conversation has somehow shifted to what MEGHAN should have done differently.

Let me get this straight. She’s wrong for establishing boundaries, but she’s also wrong for not doing more?

And here’s what makes this conversation even more troubling.

Meghan is a biracial Black woman who entered one of the world’s most historically white institutions. The intersection of race, gender, power, and public scrutiny deserves examination.

Because this isn’t just about Meghan.

It’s about the expectations we place on women to manage the behavior of the men in their lives. It’s about how boundaries are interpreted as betrayal. And it’s about how easily accountability gets redirected.

You don’t have to like Meghan Markle. You don’t have to agree with every decision she’s made.

But you can still recognize a double standard.

At what point do we stop questioning a woman’s boundaries and start questioning why she needed them?

My latest ZORA article explores this further: Meghan Markle Can’t Win. And That’s Exactly the Problem.
