Journal of Illustration
Volume 13 Issue 2
Coming Soon ~ November 2026

Drawing Out Futures attempts to set the foundations for a new era. This issue is rich with visual essays and writing that disrupts format. We hope this opens further conversations about what illustration can be within the context of an academic journal and what comes next for ‘illustration and heritage’.

This volume has unfolded across a period of time, developed between late 2024 and mid-2026, and this discussion, once published and in physical print, for a moment in time will become ‘fixed’. But we encourage readers, practitioners and academics to build upon what is in these pages. As the field is continually shaped by the present, informed by the past and moves onwards into the future.

“Often, language can be used to create divisions: ‘this is heritage’ and ‘this is illustration’. The conjunction ‘and’ between ‘Illustration’ and ‘Heritage’ creates a separation. It suggests that one is like or in comparison with the other, but, crucially, they’re not the same thing. Illustration is, arguably, very much part of the heritage process. Labelling it and separating it, can make it appear as if illustration has been added in or added onto heritage.” - @dr_rachelemilytaylor (22 November 2024)

Moody Ireland. Shot on Ilford black and white HP5, but on a 200 iso. by @dr_rachelemilytaylor

We drove down from Dublin, through Killarney, along the Beara Peninsula and Sheep’s Head, before ending in Rosscarbery and Cork, tracing the places where my family lived before they left Ireland in the 1850s.

They say that if you find a four-leaf clover, you can see beyond the veil. I can’t be sure that I truly saw any faeries, but I do think I saw Ireland’s beauty. 🍀 by @dr_rachelemilytaylor

After seven years as Course Leader of BA (Hons) Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, it’s time for a new chapter.

It has been a privilege to support all my of students throughout their journeys on the course, and to work alongside an incredible team of colleagues, all committed to making a difference and with a passion for illustration.

From 1 August, I’ll be transitioning to the role of ‘Reader in Illustration and Heritage’ in the Design School at CCW, University of the Arts London. And, no, this does not mean I’ll just be reading lots of books! It is a title at UAL that’s equivalent in rank to an Associate Professor.

I’m looking forward to this next stage and to working with students and staff in this new capacity✨

Thank you @giomarrafaria for the video of us both at graduation 2026 💙

Aaaaand… I was not told I would be at the front of the stage until a few minutes before, which is why I am in Birkenstocks!

The Journal of Illustration Volume 13, Issue 1, 'Illustration & Heritage: Sharing Histories', is now out in print.

It was a pleasure to work alongside @amy.goodwin.signwriter on this issue as co-editors. Amy created the beautiful traditional signwriting interventions that run throughout the issue, and they can be fully appreciated in the printed edition.

Thank you to all of the authors for your thoughtful work @chris_l_e_e_ @thinkablespace @jimbutlerartist @fionnuala4000 @mooneyabbie @juditferencz @rachelmlillie @david_lemm @stephparrr @mawra.tahreem. Thank you, too, to the @illustration.research section editors for your input and the team at @intellectbooks. And @bryonyquiquinn @billiemuraben for your wisdom, as always.

Thank you to @nanette_hoogslag_illustration and @desdemonab for trusting us with this special issue. It's been a long time in the making - we began developing it in 2022 as part of the 14th Annual International Illustration Research Symposium hosted by @camberwellual at @chelseaual - and it's wonderful to finally hold the first issue in print.

Issue 2, 'Illustration & Heritage: Drawing Out Futures', will be published in November. by @dr_rachelemilytaylor

Rooftops over Lucca shot on Kodak Gold 200 with a Olympus OM-2.

Legend says that Lucca’s Tower of Hours (Torre delle Ore) is haunted by a local resident. Her name is Lucida Mansi, a noblewoman who sold her soul to the devil so she could remain young. When her time was running out, on the night of 14 August 1623, she climbed to the top of the tower to stop the bell chiming, but he came for her soul anyway… 🕰️ by @dr_rachelemilytaylor
