The amazing soil at James Rebanks @herdyshepherd1
To touch the soil is to touch the beginning - the quiet place where life first gathers itself. For the soil is the mirror of our stewardship, the witness to our choices, the keeper of our consequences. Look closely into the earth and you will see not only what the land has become, but who we have been as its caretaker.

Happy 66th birthday to our founder, Dr. Allen Williams.

Allen is a sixth-generation farmer, scientist, teacher, researcher, speaker, consultant, and mentor whose work has influenced thousands of farmers and ranchers across all 50 states and more than 45 countries.

He has spent decades helping people better understand soil health, adaptive grazing, livestock integration, and regenerative agriculture, and his impact on the farming world is hard to measure.

But to us, his greatest influence is much closer to home.

Etta Hills Farm would not exist without his vision, leadership, and example. He has taught us to look differently at the land beneath our feet, the animals in our care, the food we produce, and the responsibility we carry as stewards.

Above all, Allen strives to be a faithful steward and servant of God, using the gifts, knowledge, and opportunities he has been given to serve others and care for creation well.

To us, he is Dad, Granddad, family, mentor, teacher, and the foundation behind so much of what Etta Hills Farm has become.

We are grateful for the legacy you have already built and even more grateful that we get to keep building alongside you.

Happy 66th birthday, Dr. Allen Williams.

Help us wish him a happy birthday in the comments.

Dead or alive?

Three-foot-long blades of grass grow throughout this field in Wales after nearly a year of rest.

To many observing it, the common interpretation might be a “dead” or “dormant” field. But James was thrilled to discover that his efforts to rest this field for nearly a year have resulted in quite the opposite.

Longer rest periods can create an opportunity for a biological reset. Plants alter their morphology, producing significantly more biomass both above and below ground.

And what does that mean beneath our feet?

Deeper roots. More biological activity. More soil microbes working for you.

Sometimes what looks dormant above ground is anything but dead below it.

Since our first visit in July, we’ve been called back for another week on these beautiful lands ~ reconnecting with farmers and their families, meeting new faces, and connecting with a growing community of people interested in regenerative living.

🌱 Restoring the ecosystems of our lands.
🌿 Revitalizing our health.
🤍 Reconnecting with nature and living more in harmony with it.
🏞️ Strengthening the communities around us.

There is something powerful about seeing these ideas take root not only across individual farms, but throughout a community.

Here’s to another incredible week in Wales and beyond 🇬🇧 alongside @drallenwilliamsphd and @libertasland. 🌱 by @drallenwilliamsphd

🇩🇪 Visiting Haus Baden - Schloss Salem~ Stewardship across generations.🌱 It was an honor to spend time with Prince Michael of Baden, Roman Strasser and the team at Haus Baden, alongside @drallenwilliamsphd, exploring the agricultural lands surrounding Schloss Salem and their ongoing regenerative journey.

As @libertasland, our time in the fields focused on observing the progress already underway, discussing challenges and considerations across the landscape, and exploring the next steps in continuing to build soil health, resilience and long-term agricultural vitality.

Regeneration is inherently generational~ the stewardship decisions we make today become part of the inheritance of tomorrow. 🌱

That sentiment felt particularly meaningful here, on land shaped by centuries of history and stewardship.

Prince Michael also graciously took us on a brief detour to visit the historic monastery connected to the family estate, an extraordinary glimpse into another chapter of its history, before we continued our time together in the fields.

With Lake Constance as the backdrop, it was a beautiful day of learning, exchange and shared commitment to the future of the land.

Grateful to Prince Michael, Roman and Haus Baden for the warm welcome and for inviting us to contribute to this ongoing journey. by @drallenwilliamsphd

Wendell Berry was more than a remarkable writer, poet, farmer, and thinker to me. I considered Wendell a true mentor—someone whose words, wisdom, and example helped shape the way I see the land and my responsibility to it.

There are certain people who enter your life and cause you to see things more clearly. Wendell was one of those people for me. He possessed a rare understanding that the land beneath our feet is not simply property or a resource from which we extract value. It is alive. It is an inheritance. And for the brief time it is entrusted to us, we have a responsibility to leave it healthier, more resilient, and more abundant than we found it.

That conviction has been at the heart of my own life’s work in regenerative agriculture. Wendell understood long before the term “regenerative agriculture” became widely used that the health of the soil, the farmer, the family, the community, and ultimately society itself are inseparably connected. You cannot diminish one without eventually diminishing the others.

What I valued most about Wendell was that these were never merely ideas to him. He lived them. His love for the land was deeply personal, practical, and rooted in place. He reminded us that good farming is not simply about what we produce; it is about what we restore, what we protect, and what we pass forward.

I am profoundly grateful that Wendell Berry’s life and work intersected with mine. His influence will remain with me every time I walk across a pasture, dig into healthy soil, watch livestock move across the landscape, or work with another farmer who has decided to leave the land better than they found it.

Wendell understood something we desperately need to remember: we do not inherit the land simply to use it—we are entrusted with it so that life can continue to flourish long after we are gone.

I will miss his voice, but I will carry his wisdom with me. And I believe the greatest tribute we can offer Wendell is to continue the work—to care deeply for the land, regenerate what has been diminished, strengthen our communities, and leave something worthy for the generations who follow.
