POSTS STORIES REELS

After years of pushing toward one goal, it’s finally getting real:

My next book—my third—will be published by Avery, an imprint of @penguinrandomhouse!

One day, coming to a bookstore or airport near you, OUTSIDE-IN: THE NEW SCIENCE OF SELF-TRANSFORMATION.

A book about how, by leveraging our environments, we can learn to live unconditionally. Bringing sociology to center stage and in a new light— during a time when our discipline is under attack— I will share insights on how we can thrive, heal, and contribute to something greater than our individual selves.

I’ve never worked harder on anything. Breaking into trade publishing without a massive platform (aka 20K followers) is a gauntlet. And I haven’t even written the book yet.

My brilliant agent, Ian Bonaparte at Janklow & Nesbit @janklownesbit, has been the kind of advocate/book doula every writer hopes for. And now I get to work with Lucia Watson at Avery, an esteemed editor I’m thrilled about.

OUTSIDE-IN is about more than self-help. It’s about how the worlds around us shape what we think is possible. @avery_books feels like a dream landing spot. They’ve published books like The Myth of Normal, Daring Greatly, and Atomic Habits.

Next up, OUTSIDE-IN.

NYC ya later

6 years. And 1 day. Last night we went to dinner without our phones and it was splendid.

My wife let me go see Spider-Man by myself (literally in an empty theater). If that’s not love then I don’t know what is! Here are a few pics of Pam not closing her eyes when I kiss her because she’s just too into me and never learned social conventions.

Happy AnniV to the CEO of our household who fortunately I can say still looks sexy and not worry about getting fired. Probably because I’m the romantic one. I love the life we’re making and our family gives me air. To many more. by @drbengalitiger

Hood River in the annual Portland pilgrimage was particularly restorative. Pam is pretty good at finding hikes and me, bevies in between. Hard to beat craft beer with fresh fish and chips (salmon and snapper).

Mika started choosing the edits in these photos at some point- you may be able to tell where. by @drbengalitiger

Read my latest piece of public scholarship and first article for @the_74 on Miami-Dade’s reversal of our universal free lunch policy. Fighting for public education means upholding it as a PUBLIC good— our society’s most important.

In public schools, ALL kids should eat for free. What do you think? ✊🏾🫡 by @drbengalitiger

Haters will say this can’t be #Florida 😤

Just in: There’s no more free lunch for all public school students in Miami-Dade. This doesn’t just impact hungry kids and their families. It diminishes sense of belonging for everyone, and tells us there’s no such thing as a public good— even for our children.

Dissent is duty!

Being freshly-tenured means getting to more freely share some of my favorite headlines from #editorials I’ve written since moving to Miami (from the more progressive bubble of NYC).

The stakes have been just as high as the potential consequences, and at times, it’s actively felt risky. (For instance, my university learned about our piece about their partnership with ICE before it was published. That happened literally during the tail-end of my #tenure review.)

But there is no sugar coating the reality that authoritarianism is on the rise. We cannot laud bullies and cower to power. Power belongs to the people, not their representatives.

And everyone’s liberation is tied to everyone else’s.

Living here, in this “trendsetter” state, allows me to make this case with skin in the game. You can bet I’ll be looking to take advantage of my newly bestowed extra #academic freedom.🫡 by @drbengalitiger

Just got the word: I got tenured in Florida (a year early) doing equity-focused work. Go figure!

Grateful to say I’ve been awarded tenure / promoted to Associate Professor at FIU, a top research institution, but more importantly, the nation’s leader in promoting students’ social mobility.

It’s been a year of review, first by top scholars across the country in my field(s) and then by colleagues at all levels of the university—from my department to the Provost, to the Board of Trustees. It’s pretty intense. I was honored to receive unanimous support throughout the process.

One reviewer wrote:
“Dr. Kundu is exactly the kind of public scholar needed to reassure a skeptical population that research conducted on college campuses helps us make better sense of the world, our experiences, and our outcomes in important ways.”

More than a title or milestone, it just means keep going. I’m lucky to do what I love and champion the idea that everyone is brilliant and deserving of opportunity.

Thanks to incredible support system— my colleagues, mentors, students, friends, my family, my wife, and my kids—who all give me purpose and direction.

Onwards 🤙🏾 by @drbengalitiger

Celebrated the cosmic union of @alexcasariego and @oconnorpadraig; supercharged some core friendships; and fell in love all over again (for the gazilionth time) with @sefuealavilla 🫶🏽🕺🏽💃🏽🚀☀️🍾 by @drbengalitiger

Florida politics gonna Florida politics.

This time, we’re focused on removing sociology from college students core curriculum.

But this isn’t just about #sociology, it’s about who gets the tools to understand #power and who doesn’t.

I’ve been stepping up my public writing not only because the times call for it, but because I have some exiting and important things in the works. If you know anyone who’d like my substack, please share with them! Thank you 🙏🏽 by @drbengalitiger
