Join speaker Dr. Peter Suedfeld as he discusses two families, joined in marriage, who lived as ordinary Hungarian citizens for several centuries. Their accustomed way of life changed drastically when in the 1940s the Holocaust focused on the Jews of Hungary. Over the next few years, they lost all rights, possessions, and protection from the state. Eventually, all younger men became slave labourers for the army; other family members were deported to concentration camps, mostly to Auschwitz, where many were murdered; and most of the rest were crammed into the ghetto. Peter, the sole child in both families, was hidden in an orphanage. The talk describes the diverse nature of their experiences and of how the survivors rebuilt their lives, with new homes, new work, and in some cases new families.

All are welcome to attend this free public lecture.
Pre-registration is required at the link below.

“And so it is crucial to remember that evolutionary theory is only an explanation of what has happened up to now—it is not a recommendation for how human beings ought to behave in the future.” (Greg Epstein, Good Without God) by @drblairpsych

“Our identities help us make sense of the world. They reveal many things but obscure others. If we focus on one thing, we inevitably miss something else. Worse, we struggle to recognize our own biases. Though we can readily see how other people’s perceptions are fallible, we often fail to see how our own experiences are filtered through the lenses of our identities. Researchers call this the “bias blind spot,” and it is common.” (Jay J. Van Bavel and Dominic J. Packer, The Power of Us) by @drblairpsych

“things about us humans: We don’t know what we would do in most hypothetical situations, and even after we have behaved in a certain way, we are often unaware of why we did what we did.” (Elliot Aronson, Not by Chance Alone) by @drblairpsych

Each year, @trentuniversity graduating students vote to select four speakers to deliver Trent's version of "The Last Lecture." The speakers are selected to represent the alumni, staff, graduating students and faculty. This year, I had the pleasure (and daunting task) of being the faculty speaker.

The theme was the university's tagline: Challenge The Way You Think, and I tried to take that sentiment to heart when writing my address.

When I was an undergraduate, I remember there being nothing more exhilarating than a controversial campus speaker. A quarter century later, one is hard-pressed to find controversial speakers on university campuses - their invitations are usually revoked long before they can speak. Universities are supposed to be where we come to debate, discuss, and confront uncomfortable truths. Universities are supposed to be the bastions of free speech and academic freedom. Yet, we often find that our campuses are places where far too many feel silenced and fear that speaking their mind may lead to their ouster. It is very challenging to challenge how we think when we can no longer trust that our peers will be gracious listeners, willing to prod our ideas, debate our facts, and forgive our missteps along our journey to new understandings.

I am proud that my university has a motto and written dedication to challenging the way that we think. I hope that my colleagues and students (past, present, and future) will be able to live up to this sentiment, whether that be in how we challenge our own thoughts on difficult topics or how we respond to those with whom we disagree.

This lecture really was my last (for a while). I will be on sabbatical for the next 12 months. As part of that sabbatical, I plan to take a break from social media. My accounts will be less active, but I will occasionally post to support the research of my students and colleagues.

When I return, I hope to have renewed enthusiasm and courage for challenging the way YOU think! by @drblairpsych

Recent psychology honours graduate Jenny Truong presented her thesis research at the 2024 @canadianpsychological annual convention in Ottawa. Jenny’s thesis explored the reasons we tend to think others might disapprove of our romantic relationships while contrasting these with the reasons we offer for disapproving of our loved ones’ relationships!

Jordan Wills presented her research at the 2024 @canadianpsychological associations conference in Ottawa this past weekend. The research began as an assignment in my History of Psychology course where each student worked with a transcript from the Oral History project created by Roger Myers in the 1970s. Jordan worked with the transcript of Charles Watson and found an interesting quote where he lamented the “take over” of psychological approaches to mental health by what he saw as the medical model used in psychiatry. What do you think? Was his prediction correct? Have we made it more difficult to provide mental health treatment that is effective by focusing funding etc on the medical model to the detriment of more psychological and psychosocial interventions (which often require personal funding or insurance to access today?) by @drblairpsych

“After all, when Gordon Allport and I had had our lunch at the Harvard Faculty Club, freely discussing anti-Semitism and racial prejudice, it did not occur to us to be equally outraged that female faculty had to enter the club through the back door.” (Elliot Aronson, Not by Chance Alone) by @drblairpsych
