Hi🤓 I’m Dr. Chen. . I am an associate professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. . I am board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, with a subspecialty certificate in surgery of the hand, and I am a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. . I went to @ucla for undergrad, @georgetownuniversity for a Masters degree, @uofcincy for medical school, and trained at @pittplasticsurgery (residency) and @uclahand (fellowship). I also spent time at Mount Sinai and Oregon Health Sciences learning about gender affirming care, spent a year at the NIH before medical school investigating post-mastectomy lymphedema, and a year during residency investigating whole-eye microsurgical allotransplantation. . My philosophy towards patient care is simply to take care of people like they’re my family, friends, or fellow surgeons. To serve to the best of my ability every day, and be better every day than I was yesterday. . Photo credit: @laviephotograph . #surgeonmom #plasticsurgeons by @drchendy
Why plastic surgery? . For me, there are so many reasons why I chose plastic, reconstructive, and hand surgery as my specialty. . Before we moved to Taiwan from California, as a young child, my grandparents lived with us. My grandfather was a chemical engineer, worked at a plant, and had suffered burns to his extremities. His hands were stiff, and for me at the time, scary. Later, in high school in Taiwan, I volunteered at an orphanage caring for young children abandoned due to congenital differences. Experiences like these made medicine and healing an obvious career path. . As an adult, I recognized the power of function, recreation, human connection, quality of life, social justice, and dignity that plastic surgeons can confer through our work. The progress we make with our patients, both emotionally and surgically, is a humbling, rewarding, and it’s a privilege to take care of others as part of their journey. . On an intellectual level, plastic surgeons are creative, artistic, problem solvers, master technicians, research innovators… we treat patients of every age, for every kind of diagnosis, from the hair on your head to the toes on your feet. It’s an incredibly exciting and challenging field, and I feel lucky to be part of this special tribe! . Photo credit: @laviephotograph . #surgeonmom #plasticsurgeons by @drchendy
Outside of the OR, I’m passionate about the representation of minorities in surgery and medicine. Research has shown patients and healthcare can benefit from a more diverse work force. Much of my research, activism, and educational events are centered around gender, leadership, workplace culture, surgeon family planning, access/equity, patient outcome disparities, and more. I often speak nationally on this topic and participant in many national committees. . Some mentions🤓… - Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society - Dozens of research awards, scholarships, and invited lectures - Dozens of publications, hundreds of presentations - 40 Under 40 Houston Business Journal honoree - Association of Women Surgeons 40 Under 40 honoree - McGovern Medical School Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award/Champion of Clinical Learning Environment - Texas Super Doctors Rising Stars - The inaugural John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Distinguished Faculty Award in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - Invited Inaugural Physician Advisory Council Member for multiple affinity groups - Efforts to fund raise and build fellowship and community amongst surgeons and future surgeons . I’m grateful to the trailblazers before me and the teammates and allies beside me Outside of the **hospital**, you’ll find me with my little family 👩🏻‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏿👶🏽🐕enjoying life in the kitchen, outdoors, or with friends! PSTM2026 is a wrap! Academic Plastic surgery is an ecosystem. Becoming more involved in creating educational content has taught me that it takes a huge village- hours and hours from students, residents, and full fledged surgeons alike, to create a conference with diverse educational and networking value. And it all starts with showing up every day, taking one step at a time, to advance our field in the direction we want to take it I am Proud to serve on numerous committees and to contribute to many different facets of plastic surgery as a science and educational community 👏👏👏 to @drkshiprahemal @thaiscalderonmd @liamhcheng @kass_carrion @cchristinamiao @madeleine.givant @alexandranelsonn @dat_journeytoplastics @raisaraufed Calvin Schuster, Maryam Ghaderi, and so many more:) by @drchendy
Congratulations to our team on this acceptance! Abra H. Shen,1 Catherine Tang,2 Mia D. Do,1 Thais Calderon,1 John H. Pang,3 Rachel Lentz,1 Wendy Chen4 Although 90.7% of faculty strongly supported resident lactation needs and 79.6% believed their institution fostered a supportive culture, 62.5% of lactating residents stopped breastfeeding earlier than intended, citing insufficient time, distant lactation spaces, and pressure to maintain workflow. One-quarter felt uncomfortable pumping around faculty, and over one-third experienced lactation-related medical complications. Postpartum mood symptoms (55.6%) and guilt (63.6%) were also prevalent among trainees. TLDR? Disparities persist between faculty and resident perceptions of parental leave and lactation support during residency training. Improving parenthood in plastic surgery requires coordinated infrastructure, support for flexible lactation practices, policy enforcement and promotion, and cultural change. Aligning policy, practice, and expectations is essential to support resident well-being, promote equity, and strengthen the plastic surgery workforce. by @drchendy

This weekend I was invited to speak about career pivots, surgeon parenthood, and things a recovering hand traumatogist has learned about top surgeries. I sat on Johnny cash’s old leather couch, shot some skeet, made new friends, learned so much, and became an honorary member of what may be the most secret society in plastic surgery… can you guess the name? 🤓 by @drchendy
