Autumn is the only season that makes letting go look beautiful.

Under the old chestnut, the ground was covered in fallen husks, each one split open, its work done. Nobody mourns them. They just become part of the ground the tree stands on next year.

A little further on, two trees stood side by side in the last of the light. Decades of growing next to each other, never touching at the roots, always sharing the same sky.

I think about that a lot. How we let go of things to make room. How we grow alongside people without ever needing to be the same.

Two trees, one season, a few quiet minutes. Another entry in the ledger. Two trees, one season, a few quiet minutes. Another entry in the ledger.

Greenwich is where the world sets its clocks.

I stood on the hill for a long time, longer than I meant to. Around me, people did what people do: a couple shared a flask of tea, a father lifted his son onto his shoulders so he could see, and an old man on a bench watched the view as if he’d seen it a thousand times and still wasn’t finished with it.

Below us, the old buildings sat quietly by the river, built by hands nobody remembers. Behind them, the towers rose, full of people racing against the same clock this hill gave the world.

I thought about how every one of us is somewhere between the two: carrying what came before, reaching for what comes next, measuring our lives in hours that started counting right here.

Maybe that’s why people climb this hill. Not for the view of the city, but for a moment where time stops asking anything of them.

Old London keeps the ledger. New London balances it. And for a few minutes up here, I didn’t have to do either.

Even the fences grow something here.

The first entry.

Some rooms hold the light longer than others.
