OPENING NIGHT..Please join us from 6-9pm at GALERIE CAMILE..We present to you FANTASTICO, a one-of-kind first EVER exhibition locally (maybe nationally?) of movie posters, lobby cards, and ephemera from the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema..Curated by myself and Dalia from our collections, these intoxicating works span from 1936-1960 and present a unique and pioneering view of graphic design, collage, photo montage, and advertising that is still light years ahead of its time. 50 prime examples by the likes of famed illustrator Cabral, Anti-Fascist poster designer Josep Renau and many others are here for you to fall in love with. We’ve been cooking this one up for you!

In an increasingly digital world, we’re looking back to honor visionaries like artist Josep Renau, whose innovative use of photomontage, typography, and graphic design helped redefine visual culture in the mid-20th century. His influence continues to remind us that great design transcends its era. Here’s a little taste of some of the posters we will have on view.

Fantástico: Wild & Winsome Poster Art from Mexico’s Golden Age, 1936–1960

Curated by Dalia Reyes and Thomas Dechristofaro, Fantástico presents a special selection of original Mexican film posters and lobby cards from the Golden Age of Cinema. Spanning 1936–1960, the exhibition explores these striking works not simply as movie advertisements, but as important examples of graphic design, visual storytelling, and cultural history.
Featuring iconic imagery associated with legendary stars including María Félix, Pedro Infante, Dolores del Río, and Cantinflas, the exhibition highlights the artistry of hand-painted lithography, photomontage, experimental typography, and bold graphic innovation that defined an era. Created during a period when Mexican cinema reached audiences around the world, these posters helped shape international perceptions of Mexico while reflecting evolving ideas of identity, modernity, and popular culture.

By bringing together rare vintage materials and historical research, Fantástico invites visitors to rediscover the enduring artistic legacy of Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema and the power of the poster as a work of art in its own right.

This collection of Mexican cinema posters isn’t just a series of neat prints, its Mexican history and we want to highlight the influential work of artists like Josep Renau and Ernesto Garcia Cabral. Similar collections are typically only shown in universities, museums and private collections - oftentimes held in storage never to be seen by the general public.

“This exhibition is for the people, by the people.”

All of the work exhibited is original and will not be for sale as we are hoping to continue to share the collection with the public. If you’d like to support this project somehow please contact me directly. Otherwise I hope you’ll join us on Fri, Aug 7, 6-9pm at my old stomping grounds, Galerie Camille.
