Have you ever tried acupuncture? I never thought I would… and then Bell’s palsy happened.

If you don’t know it, Bell’s palsy is a sudden weakness on one side of the face. Mine showed up just a few weeks ago. Along with my doctor’s care, I decided to try acupuncture as part of my recovery, and I’m bringing you with me.

✨ Did the needles hurt? Some I felt a tiny pinch
✨ How I felt after: AMAZING!!
✨ Where I am in my recovery: I’m still working on my smile but I’m finally pain free!

It’s not easy to show up on camera when your face doesn’t feel like yours. But if even one person going through this feels less alone, it’s worth it. 💛

I stopped trying to make my outfits “make sense”… and my mind got quieter

As a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, I think a lot about energy; where it flows, and where it gets unnecessarily drained. For me, something as simple as choosing an outfit used to feel overwhelming. Too many options, too many “rules”

Add being on the spectrum, where texture can make or break my entire day, and getting dressed became less about self-expression and more about stress management.

Growing up in a Hispanic household, there was always loud judgment around appearance. I carried that voice with me into adulthood, constantly criticizing, second-guessing, tearing myself down over something as small as clothes

So I let it go

Now I often dress for how I feel, not how it looks “on paper”. At times mismatched, unconventional, sensory-safe, but free

And honestly? It’s been healing.
Because peace doesn’t come from perfection, it comes from permission

Permission to be comfortable
Permission to be different
Permission to take up space exactly as we are

If your outfit feels good to you, then throw the middle finger up and live your best life 😅😎😜 by @drjessika_

I’ve been consistently exercising and meal prepping; what a game changer! I couldn’t do either of those things consistently during the 11 years I went to school, but now…now is the time. I feel so much better overall and I’m doing things I have only dreamed of doing the last few years, for example, jogging. I’m not focusing on physique, I’m focusing on overall health markers improving. I’m also focusing on flexibility, endurance, and strength as big pillars when exercising.

The new year always brings a very interesting perspective through the lens of traditional Chinese medicine. As a doctor of acupuncture, I slowly start the year off and don’t rush into any new year resolutions. The winter time period is a time for deep introspection and for rest. To jump straight into doing intense workouts, extreme calorie deficits, or trying to be super productive, can be detrimental to our health at times. I lean in to the yin energy more; more calm, silence, rest, depth.

Do you also feel this way around the new year? by @drjessika_

Social media can educate or overwhelm… 👀 and episode 23 breaks down the difference.

As a Doctor of Acupuncture, I often see how an imbalanced Wood element can quietly show up through stress, irritability, or tension in the liver, gallbladder, eyes, and tendons.

When I work with patients experiencing these patterns, I remind them that small lifestyle shifts can make a powerful difference.

Gentle, consistent movement- like stretching, yoga, or slow morning walks -helps keep the Wood element flexible instead of reactive.

I also encourage spending real time in nature, especially among trees, because it helps settle and nourish Wood energy in a way the body intuitively understands.

Choosing supportive foods such as leafy greens, fresh vegetables, and whole grains, along with staying well hydrated, gives the liver the nourishment it needs. Reducing alcohol and heavy, greasy foods can offer noticeable relief for those who feel easily overheated or tense.

Acupuncture is another powerful tool I use to help regulate Wood-type imbalances, release stagnation, and support the body’s natural flow. With these daily habits—combined with targeted acupuncture treatments—patients often find that the Wood element moves more smoothly, and their entire system comes back into a steadier, more balanced rhythm. by @drjessika_

With the holidays approaching, I’ve been prioritizing the healthy habits I’ve been consistent with the last few months and now adding some new ones!

For example, I’ve been incorporating more daily outdoor walks, not just for daily movement purposes but also for sun exposure which will help a lot during the winter months coming ahead.

Sun exposure will help with vitamin D production as well as circadian rhythm regulation. I’ve noticed a huge benefit and I’m so glad I decided to start now than waiting until New Year’s 😅.

Are you guys incorporating any healthy habits around this time? by @drjessika_
