Most of us have worn a cummerbund and had absolutely no idea it was ours. Before Bond films. Before black tie. Before the tuxedo. The kamarband was being worn across the Indian subcontinent for centuries. Then the British arrived, saw it on the Sepoys, took a liking to it, and slowly folded it into their own formalwear. By the time Prince Edward VII brought it back from his tour of India in 1875, it had a new name and no return address. This is Heritage Threads. A new series from The Asian Man exploring how South Asian culture has shaped global fashion, textiles and design in ways that often go uncredited. Issue 01: The Cummerbund. Written by Rahman Ahmed. Full story on Substack now. substack.com/theasianman Link in bio. by @drkmatta
We’ve officially launched our Substack. It feels like a natural next step for The Asian Man. For years we’ve documented style through images, spotlighting South Asian men across fashion, music, design and culture. But there has always been more to say, more context, more history, more nuance. Substack is where we slow things down. We launch with the cummerbund, the first piece in our new editorial series, Heritage Threads, a deeper look at how South Asian heritage has shaped global textiles, tailoring and design in ways that often go uncredited. This first essay, written by our latest staff writer @drkmatta traces the journey of the kamarband from the Indian subcontinent into Western black tie tradition. This carousel is the condensed version, the full piece is now live on Substack via the link in our bio. Hope you enjoy it. by @drkmatta
