I received a Golden Apple for being named Smyrna High School Teacher of the Year, so naturally, I had to have a little fun with it! 🍎 On a more serious note, I am incredibly grateful for the support of my colleagues and the people I get to work alongside each day. Schools are successful because of the collective efforts of people who show up, work hard, care about students, and bring their own unique talents and abilities to the table. I feel fortunate to work in the same community where I live, surrounded by great people, supportive leadership, and educators who make Smyrna High School such a special place for students and staff. Thank you to everyone who makes this a great place to work and, more importantly, a great place for students to learn and grow. This recognition means a lot, but the people I get to do this work with mean even more. by @drluckeydoo
Yesterday in Personal Finance, students took on the challenge of planning a spring vacation with a $2,000 budget. The goal was to create a zero-based budget, giving every dollar a purpose while planning an entire trip. Students had to consider lodging, transportation, food, entertainment, activities, and all the other expenses that come with traveling. The catch? They had to make it all work within their $2,000 budget without spending more than they had. This was a great opportunity for students to put budgeting concepts into practice, compare options, make trade-offs, and recognize how quickly expenses add up. Sometimes you have to make choices between what you want and what you can actually afford. Financial literacy is about more than knowing definitions or completing worksheets. It’s about practicing real-life decisions before you’re faced with them. And if students can learn to make $2,000 work for a spring vacation, hopefully those budgeting skills will stick when they’re planning their own futures! by @drluckeydoo
Yesterday, my students participated in MoneySecret.net, a financial literacy lesson I created to explore the personal side of money. Financial decisions aren’t just about numbers. Our upbringing, experiences, emotions, habits, and beliefs all influence how we manage money. Before students can make better financial choices, they need to understand the behaviors behind those choices. Financial literacy is about more than knowing what to do with money. It’s understanding why we do what we do with it. Sometimes, the most important financial lesson starts with a secret. See money secrets or submit your own at MoneySecret.net. by @drluckeydoo

My awesome students from the last nine weeks of my Dual Enrollment Personal Finance class put together a short video series, and I wanted to share it! I love seeing students have fun, get creative, and enjoy the experience. Check out their videos! by @drluckeydoo

Today, we played The Game of Life, and it was a great reminder that personal finance is about so much more than money. Every decision we make can impact what comes next. Choosing a career, deciding whether to go to college, buying a home, managing expenses, and planning for the unexpected all come with trade-offs. Sometimes, we make a decision that pays off. Other times, we face an unexpected expense or realize we could have made a better choice. That is what makes personal finance so important. We cannot predict everything life will throw our way, but we can learn to make informed decisions, think about the long-term consequences, prepare for the unexpected, and adjust when things do not go according to plan. One of my favorite things about using games and simulations in the classroom is that students can practice making decisions in a low-stakes environment before facing those decisions in real life. Life does not always go according to plan, and neither does your budget. The goal is not to make every decision perfectly. It is to learn from our choices, build good habits, and put ourselves in a better position for whatever comes next. Sometimes, the best financial lesson starts with a board game! by @drluckeydoo
