I was working as Director of Audio Operations at Sony Music Studios and was on a bus heading to work when the first plane hit.

I was caught in traffic on the Lincoln Tunnel helix when the second plane hit. We all watched in horror as the reality of what was happening began to sink in.

My first reaction was, I need to get into the City. My sister-in-law worked at the World Trade Center. Thankfully, she was able to get out of the building safely. This was her second time in the buildings when they were attacked.

But I remember those who did not.

I remember the firehouse on 8th Avenue in the 50s I walked by each day that lost almost all of its firefighters. I remember the tears, the fear, the confusion and the heartbreak. I remember a city and a nation struggling to comprehend what had happened.

But I also remember something else.

I remember how we came together.

For a moment, we were simply Americans. We stood together. We supported one another. We helped strangers. We put aside our differences and recognized our shared humanity.

September 11 reminds me of the unimaginable loss, the pain and the hatred that led to that terrible day. But it also reminds me of the hope, compassion and goodness that emerged from the horror.

We should never forget those we lost.

And we should never forget what we were capable of when we stood together.

Never forget. 🇺🇸 by @drootinator
