2015, leaving the UK to study medicine in Bulgaria, with an idea of becoming a doctor...

3,977 days later, a medical degree, law degree, business, leaving medicine, coming back to medicine, working in Dubai, dream house, wife and baby later, we open the next chapter of this amazing journey as I start my third year of GP training

to all the new doctors starting their first jobs today and to all the doctors who are rotating and moving onto new jobs... medicine is genuinely a marathon, not a sprint.

some days will be hard. some days you’ll question why you ever signed up for this. but it really is one of the most rewarding careers out there.

one thing I’ve learnt over the last 11 years is that medicine can be so much more than just medicine. you can teach, lead, build businesses, work in policy, create content, do research... whatever interests you. there isn’t one right way to have a career as a doctor.

in a world where everyone seems to tell doctors to leave, i’m going to say the opposite.

stick with it! you never know where it’ll take you! by @drprashladva

Royal Garden Party 2026 🌞

Earlier this month, I was invited to Buckingham Palace and was lucky enough to take my Dad and family with me.

A surreal and incredibly special moment — one I’m sure we’ll remember for a very long time.

Why is diabetes risk higher for South Asians?
Hey guys, I'm Prash, an NHS doctor building @oja.health, the health hub for South Asians.

Welcome to Part 2 of If the Group Chat Had a Doctor, the series I'm making with @oja.health, where I answer the health questions people actually ask, in plain English.

This time we're covering how to get checked for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes through your GP and the NHS, including the HbA1c blood test, and what to ask when you're there.

Mind the gap: if you're South Asian, your risk of type 2 diabetes starts to rise from age 25, but NHS Health Check invites don't start until 40!

If you're worried, here are 3 ways to get checked:
1. NHS Health Check: free every 5 years if you're 40 to 74. Not been invited? Ask your GP practice or local pharmacy.
2. Ask your GP practice about a check. The NHS says South Asian people are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes from age 25.
3. Diabetes UK's Know Your Risk tool: a few quick questions. High risk? See your GP.

Things you may want to ask your GP:
• "Am I due an HbA1c test?" Mention your background and any family history.
• "Which BMI cut-off are you using for me?" For South Asian adults, the NHS counts 23 as overweight, not 25.
• "If my HbA1c is 42 to 47, can you refer me to Healthier You?" That's the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

Save this for your next GP appointment. Share it with someone who might need it.
Follow @drprashladva and @oja.health for more, and comment the topic you want me to cover next!

General information, not medical advice. Seek medical advice or discuss with your GP if needed.

"Those who don't believe in magic will never find it"

Sept/Oct so far 🫶🏼 excited for the family winter!! by @drprashladva

Had an HbA1c result back and not sure what it means? Let’s go through it calmly. 📩

This is the Part 1 of my new series which I'm calling "If the Group Chat Had a Doctor". In it, I take the health questions people usually ask friends and family, or quietly google at 2am, and answer them properly as an NHS doctor.

Expect clear, honest explainers on blood results, symptoms, myths and the topics we don’t always talk about. No jargon, no scare tactics.

Now HbA1c... There isn’t one magic number. Two different questions often get mixed up:

1️⃣ Do I have diabetes? (diagnosis)
2️⃣ If I have type 2, what should my number be? (your personal target)

In the UK, HbA1c is measured in mmol/mol and shows your average blood sugar over the last 2–3 months. For adults, under 42 is generally the normal range, 42–47 is higher risk, and 48 or above can mean diabetes. If you’ve got no symptoms, your GP will usually confirm it with a second test.

If you already have type 2, your target should be agreed between you and your GP or diabetes team. Sometimes a slightly higher target is the safer choice.

Got a letter with a number on it? Save this for your GP appointment, and share it with someone who might need it. Follow along for the rest of the series, and drop a comment with the topic you’d like me to cover next. 💛

General information only, not medical advice. Please speak to your own GP or diabetes nurse about your results.

Come and spend the day with me as a GP trainee 🩺

Nothing particularly glamorous. clinic, studying, trying to make it to the gym, getting some work done and finding a bit of time to switch off in between.

Some days are packed, some are slower. Some days are longer, some feel productive, others… not so much 😂

Still figuring out the balance between being a doctor, studying, working on things outside of medicine and actually having a life.

A pretty normal day, really.

What does your average day look like? 👇🏽

August, you’ve been a whirlwind of family time, rest and resetting before the winter arc 🍂

But it’s fully time to lock in now 🔒 and low key, I’m defo more of an Autumn person anyway. Excited to see what the rest of the year brings!

Note to self: buy an AC this winter ready for next summer 🤣 by @drprashladva
