Today marks the official launch of Proudmans, a new specialist family law firm that represents parents and children in both children and financial remedy cases following divorce. We’re taking on new clients.

Our firm offers expert, trauma-informed representation with a uniquely integrated team of in-house barristers and solicitors. We understand the structural challenges within the family courts and have the expertise to navigate them effectively, ensuring that every client receives the highest standard of advice and advocacy.

For many years, I’ve worked to change the way the legal system responds to domestic abuse from campaigning to reform the presumption of parental involvement to changing the law for survivors of abuse. That same commitment to achieving safer outcomes lies at the heart of Proudmans’ mission.

After many rewarding years at Goldsmith Chambers, I will be moving on from chambers to focus fully on developing Proudmans. I remain deeply grateful to my colleagues there for their friendship and support.

If you would like to learn more about our work, please visit www.proudmans.com or reach out directly to Proudmans, we would be delighted to hear from you.

In the family court, traumatised women seek safety and justice, often to find only disdain and cruel insensitivity. Survivors of sexual, physical and emotional violence are called liars because they lack evidence for their claims, and deemed unreliable witnesses compared to the men who abused them. They are forced to recall the worst moments of their lives in excruciating detail, sometimes face-to-face with their violent ex, and always confronted with a lawyer who will do anything to destroy their story.

Barrister Charlotte Proudman has represented countless women in cases spanning rape, domestic abuse, child abduction, forced marriage and female genital mutilation. She has seen first-hand how the family court deepens the trauma of vulnerable women, staking their futures on the biases of individual judges and forcing them to endure the torture of a judicial process that stretches over months and sometimes years. Drawing on shocking real-life cases, in He Said, She Said Charlotte lays bare the extent of misogyny and victim-blaming that infects our justice system: the court’s impulse to believe a man at all costs and to discredit a woman for any reason.

Out May 2025.

The criminal justice system needs a shake up. We know these myths aren’t true, but they are still used. Even in 2026. It shouldn’t be allowed. by @drproudman

Thank you to the survivors and victims who spoke up. by @drproudman

A judge described a 14-year-old boy who stabbed a 14-year-old girl up to ten times as a “bright lad” and said prison was the “last place” for him.

The teenager followed the girl into a shop and stabbed her after she ended their relationship.

He pleaded guilty to several offences, including inflicting grievous bodily harm, and was sentenced at Gloucester Crown Court by HHJ Ian Lawrie KC. He received a three-year restraining order and a one-year referral order.

In sentencing, the judge acknowledged the teenager’s young age and capacity to learn and change. Rehabilitation is an important principle of youth justice. However, cases involving such serious violence raise difficult questions about how the justice system balances rehabilitation, accountability and the protection of victims.

This case has troubling parallels with Jazmine’s case. Jazmine, a teenage rape survivor, saw her attackers initially avoid custody after HHJ Rowland told them that they were young and that none needed to go to prison that day.

We supported Jazmine in the subsequent Court of Appeal proceedings, where two of the sentences were found to be unduly lenient and increased to four years’ detention.

Following the appeal, Jazmine, her parents and Dr Charlotte Proudman met with Attorney General Ellie Reeves KC MP to discuss the need for sentencing reform, greater accountability and improvements in how victims are treated throughout the justice system.

“There is no fit father who is also a rapist.”

Dr Charlotte Proudman joined Lucy Hayton on the Right to Equality podcast to launch their new series “Halve It” asking leading minds how they would halve violence against women and girls.

Kristopher White is a serial rapist convicted by the criminal courts of raping a teenage girl as well as found by the family courts to have raped and coercively controlling the mother of his child.

The family court judge ordered that the child have regular unsupervised contact in the community with her rapist father and the mother was forced to facilitate this contact. In the judgment, the judge referred to the presumption of parental involvement as the basis of her decision to order contact.

Dr Charlotte Proudman, representing the mother, appealed the decision. The appeal was successful and the court identified serious procedural failings including an inadequate PD12J risk assessment.
Following the appeal, the mother supported two journalists’ applications securing publication of the father’s identity as a convicted serial rapist, overcoming opposition from both the father and Cafcass.

At Proudmans, a trauma-informed, specialist family law firm, we understand the trauma caused to children by the abuse suffered by their mother and advocate for them as victims in their own right. by @drproudman

In a landmark judgment delivered by the President of the Family Division, the Court of Appeal has considered the new “Child Focused Court” (CFC) model for the first time.

The judgment, which upheld a contact order between four children and a father found to have abused both the mother and their four children, raised serious concerns about how domestic abuse is handled in these new courts.

The CFCs were designed to speed up proceedings and encourage swift decisions. Information is gathered and assessments are made without intervention from the parents. A final decision can be made without holding a hearing. This risks allegations of domestic abuse not being properly heard or considered.

Rights of Women wrote to the court to highlight the danger of making decisions without hearing oral evidence, as the mother in this case said the judge had used the CFC model to limit her ability to present her case. In its response the Court reiterated the existing legal framework for domestic abuse but failed to grapple with the practical issues with the evidence gathering process.

The Court also did not find it necessary to provide the guidance on domestic abuse requested by CAFCASS.

This judgment sends an unwavering message that the CFC must preserve the hard-won legal protections for victim-survivors in Family Court. However, there remain outstanding questions about how this preservation will be achieved in practice. Adequate investigation and consideration of domestic abuse should not be sacrificed in the pursuit of speed.
