Written by Noam Chomsky in 2012:

“The massive destruction was all in Gaza. Israel used advanced U.S. military equipment and relied on U.S. diplomatic support, including the usual U.S. intervention efforts to block a Security Council call for a cease-fire.”

... 2012, y’all. How are we still on the wrong side of history?

This quote is from an article linked as a source for someone who claimed Noam Chomsky did not say a different, better-known statement at the beginning of his article. He might not have written it on the sign, but he did make it more visible for the man who held it.

Chomsky stated, “An old man in Gaza held a placard that read: ‘You take my water, burn my olive trees, destroy my house, take my job, steal my land, imprison my father, kill my mother, bombard my country, starve us all, humiliate us all, but I am to blame: I shot a rocket back.’”

OH! And I was today years old when I learned about Marcus Garvey’s Black Cross nurses. Pop quiz: What tragic historic event did they volunteer for?

“Whose mans is this?”

I feel a little guilty now for not knowing who W. Kamau Bell was when “The Conversation” popped up in my YouTube ads. At the time I was like, “That’s not ?uestlove.” 🤔

Skipped.
Skipped.
Skipped.
Finally I let the ad ride while I finished something this morning, and I liked the real conversation I overheard answering real questions about vaccination against COVID-19.

People aren’t stupid for questioning the data - science hasn’t always treated folks the best, especially black and brown folks. And regardless of who we’re talking about, even “the studies show” that people don’t care as much about what the studies show as we do about what happened with our cousin, our pastor, our colleague. Our mans and womens and mama nem. 🥴

So if you’re nem and you want others around you to get access and get vaxxed so we can really end this pandemic, please be patient and full of care. Still wear your mask and protect your pod, and let your folks know when/if YOU get vaxxed (and please do!). Be sensitive with questions. “The Conversation: Between Us, About Us” with GreaterThanCOVID.org is a great place to start. The linked sites also have information by state and resources for finding locations.

Also: We had the soreness and aches after the second dose that some people have described. But I can’t describe the relief, too. Our world has a long way to go but even a little light at the end of the tunnel is just amazing after we’ve spent so long in the dark.

Hey it might snow again!

Or: Another Rant About Education! I accidentally saw Accuweather News' brief - “Parents say school closures are causing kids to deal with mental health issues” (Navarro, Feb 9, 2020 if searching)

Summary: Parents in Washington DC “Suburbs”🤨 want kids in school because they are lonely & sleepy & they’ve lost purpose.

Q? So “DC suburbs”: are they talking about the whole city? A specific subsection of DC households?
(A: Virginia. 😒Ok...)

TL;DR of rant below: If officials cannot ensure the system-wide safety of school buildings and classrooms, and if administrators can’t meet recommendations for optimal & equitable learning - digital or otherwise - then they are endangering their entire stakeholder base by using ill-informed voices to appease their constituents. We do have safer options.

Rant: The truth is kids had emotional health concerns before COVID-19 made them stay home, but parents & government administrations tried to ignore that growing problem while kids could be put on the bus for teachers and school counselors to deal with.

Kids are MORE lonely now that they’re physically separate, but too many were lonely and distracted BEFORE quarantine, even while surrounded by their classmates. We can solve social isolation over multiple mediums, as evidenced by the number of people - young & old - who engage with friends & colleagues meaningfully online every day. The problem is, no one was listening to the teachers, employees, and researchers BEFORE who said we needed to engage with one another differently - who gave specific evidence for how to improve connectedness and sense of community. That’s an investment we have NOT made yet, despite our desperation for normalcy.

Let’s revisit the news article, shall we? A parent’s quote about kids needing “purpose” for school doesn’t take into account that long-term wellness is just as important as short-term mental health solutions that are actually safe for students, teachers, and families.

Honestly. Tell kids who have lost loved ones to COVID-19 about how they need a short-term sense of purpose. News outlets: Tell the whole truth.

Tell the children the truth. -Bob Marley by @drsmackdown

Thank You for the sun
Rays piercing the cloudy haze of my mind
Thank You for the breeze that lets
The branches say hi
Just in case I feel alone
Thank You for the night
With its blanket whose weight
Nudges my mind to rest
Thank You
I witness these moments of LOVE
