It means they can keep finding a way through the struggle. At the July edition of the Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series, we explored the mental side of sport. One of the most powerful perspectives came from Durva Vahia, @durvav, Performance Manager, Olympic Sports at Reliance Foundation @rfyouthsports Sharing the story of an athlete who missed the Olympics, dealt with injuries, lost out on major competitions and carried years of uncertainty and doubt before eventually breaking the national record and qualifying for one of the toughest events for an Indian sprinter, Durva reminded us that an athlete’s journey is rarely linear. One of Durva’s most important insights was that performance is cyclical. There will be periods when everything comes together and periods of doubt, disappointment, injury or simply feeling stuck. A difficult season does not necessarily define what comes next. And what determines whether an athlete finds their way back is not mindset alone. It is the ecosystem around them - coaches, parents, support teams and people who are willing to be honest with them, especially when things aren’t going well. Perhaps the most important reminder for parents was that mental training cannot replace physical preparation. Confidence cannot replace hours of practice, and a positive mindset cannot manufacture performance that hasn’t been built through training. As Durva put it, you need to have the training in the bank, but you also need the mental skills to navigate the pressure, uncertainty and obstacles that are inevitable in every athlete’s journey. Mental strength isn’t about never falling apart. It’s about having the skills, support and preparation to find your way back. Watch this powerful excerpt from Durva’s opening remarks at the event. by @durvav
“It’s okay if you lose. If you want future success, you mustn’t peak early.” That was the advice Durva Vahia, @durvav Performance Manager with the Olympic Sports Programme at Reliance Foundation, @rfyouthsports remembers receiving from her father growing up - a lesson that stayed with her long before she began working in high-performance sport. Speaking at the July edition of our Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series on The Mental Game: The Psychology of High Performance in Sport, Durva reflected on why early success isn’t always the best predictor of long-term success. Instead of encouraging early specialisation or obsessing over winning, her parents exposed her to a wide range of experiences - sport, academics and everything in between - helping her build resilience, adaptability and a broader foundation for the future. It was a great reminder that an athlete’s journey isn’t a race to peak first. Sometimes, the strongest performers are those who are given the time and space to grow. Watch the video to hear Durva share why NOT peaking early may be one of the greatest advantages a young athlete can have. If you’re passionate about helping young athletes thrive, don’t miss our next conversation. Registrations for the 6th edition of the Raising An Athlete Talk Series are now open. Join us on 19 August at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, as we explore Building the Athlete Brand in the Digital Age. Entry is free, but seats are limited. The best conversations are the ones where no one is looking at the clock. Last night was one of them. At the 5th edition of Raising An Athlete Talk Series, the audience was completely immersed, and some of the most thoughtful questions came from our junior athletes themselves. One theme echoed throughout the evening: as parents, one of the hardest things we have to learn is to separate our own ambitions, fears and expectations as parents from what is truly right for our child’s development. Helping young athletes grow isn’t about removing every obstacle from their path, it’s about giving them the confidence and space to navigate challenges, make mistakes and discover what they’re capable of. A huge thank you to our exceptional panel - Prof. Varsha Singh, Dr. Sanika Divekar, Vishal Uppal and Durva Vahia and to every parent, coach and athlete who made the evening so memorable. We have the 6th edition of the talk series coming up on an incredible topic on August 19, 2026. Watch this space! by @durvav
See you at 7pm tonight. Please reach 15 mins in advance so we can start on schedule. Confidence. Pressure. Anxiety. Fear. Resilience. These are words we hear almost every day in sport. But what do they actually mean? Why do some athletes rise to the occasion while others struggle, even when they have the same level of skill? Join us this evening for the 5th edition of the Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series as we explore The Psychology of High Performance in Sport with an exceptional panel of experts: • Prof. Varsha Singh – Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, IIT Delhi • Dr. Sanika Divekar @drsanikadivekar – Sports, Exercise & Performance Psychologist • Vishal Uppal @vishaaluppal – Former Davis Cup player & one of India’s leading tennis coaches • Durva Vahia @durvav - Performance Manager, Olympic Sports, Reliance Foundation Moderated by Amita Malhotra Lalwani, @iamamitamalhotra, Founder, Equalsportz Whether you’re a parent, athlete or someone from sporting ecosystem, this session promises to bring alive rich insights on the topic. 📍 India Habitat Centre, New Delhi 🕖 Today | 7:00 PM Entry is free, but registration is mandatory and seats are limited. Meet Durva this Friday! Have you registered yet? (Details below) What if one of the most valuable things you could do for your young athlete wasn’t buying better equipment or increasing training hours but simply understanding where they are in their growth journey? In one of our Raising An Athlete podcast conversations, Durva Vahia, @durvav, Program Manager, Olympic Sports Program at Reliance Foundation, @rfyouthsports shared two simple tools that high-performance programmes use to understand an athlete’s biological development and make better training decisions. 1. Predicted Adult Height – Using the child’s current height, weight and parents’ heights, coaches can estimate their likely adult height and understand how much of their physical growth is still ahead of them. 2. Peak Height Velocity (PHV) – An estimate of when an athlete is likely to experience their fastest period of growth. This is one of the most important markers in youth sport because it helps coaches anticipate major physical and hormonal changes rather than simply reacting to them. Why does this matter? Because two athletes who are both 13 years old can be at completely different stages of development. One may have already gone through their growth spurt, while the other hasn’t even started. Their bodies, coordination, strength, recovery, injury risk and readiness for training can therefore be vastly different. Durva’s biggest message was that growth changes far more than height. During a growth spurt, an athlete’s body can change faster than their brain and movement patterns can adapt, which is why a child who looked coordinated and confident a few months ago may suddenly seem awkward, inconsistent or even less confident. Instead of assuming something is wrong, parents and coaches should first ask a different question: Where is this athlete in their biological development? Sometimes, understanding the body is the first step to understanding the athlete. We are excited to have Durva with us in New Delhi this Friday for the 5th edition of Raising An Athlete Talk Series. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn a sports science perspective on the mental game. Link in bio or DM us by @durvav
