Back after a long break. I decided to start diving into some defenses that will be having some big changes.

The Jets and former Lions DC Aaron Glenn being one of them. I thought this particular clip was cool and showed his versatility with safeties.

Here, Glenn goes with a 3 high structure that goes from a 2 high quarters look originally to a 3 high NTT (non traditional Tampa).

This is perfect for 11 and 10 personnel matching by @dwc.football

Key to winning defensively: Get Jayden Daniels going lateral. Philly has found success when Daniels has spilled out laterally by switching up their fronts as well as adding stunts to the strong side. by @dwc.football

Rams’ DC Chris Shula has had lots of success with disguising a lot of his pressures and coverages.

Shula draws up a great blitz by loading up a BOSS front to the field with #3 showing in the A gap then at the snap picking the guard and center to free up #39 on the blitz. Shula is essentially creating a MAGIC (Saban) look with the blitzers opposed to the traditional magic look with a DT and LB. #football #nfl #coaching #defense by @dwc.football

Detroit did a good job to rush Caleb Williams’ decision making with pressure.

Dialing up a double A gap blitz with Cover 1 on the backend. #31 Joseph shows some great range to almost get the pick.

Sending pressure on a smaller back in Swift led to lots of success for the Lions by @dwc.football

Cooper Dejean has been a saving grace for this Eagles defense. His ability to play sticky coverage in the slot while also being a consistent tackler has allowed Fangio to win in a multitude of ways.

Here the Eagles are in a variation of Robber coverage with Cooper responsible for everything out and up by #2. The initial press at the line kills this play for LA immediately.

But post-snap we see a fire zone blitz up the A-gap with Cov 3 on the backend.

If you want to stop counter runs successfully there are many fronts you can use but the general rules stay the same.

1. Your playside DE/OLB must take on the initial puller. Preferably with a wrong arm technique. This will slow the play down and force the RB to make a decision to cut back into defenders or spill out down the LOS

2. Your backside DT must cross the face of the center that is trying to block him down and way from the run.

3. Your linebackers need to take their respective gaps to scrape or pull. The playside backer will be the scrape man, preparing for the spill and taking away any outside running lanes.

Vic Fangio has completely revitalized this Eagles defense. Since the addition of Cooper Dejean, Fangio has been able to be more versatile in coverages.

Here we have a Quarters look with Sky coverage rules. Dejean sees #2 stem inside so passes it to Zach Baun and works as a curl flat defender to get underneath any out route by #1.

Quinyon Mitchell is playing his MOD (Man outside deep) rules unless #1 runs an under route and eliminates himself.

With Mitchell taking #1 deep. Blankenship’s primary read is anything vertical from #2. He gives himself outside leverage because he knows he can pass any over to Gardner Johnson.

Once #2 broke outside it was an easy pick for Blankenship.

Outside Zone is a staple run in almost every offense. It’s easy to teach and hard to stop if defenders aren’t playing with proper technique and pursuit.

Setting the front in a 4-2-5 can vary but in a base alignment it’s important to note that the pass strength and run strength DO NOT have to be married to each other.

In this particular example they are. Setting the front is the most important part of any defense. No assignment can have success without proper alignment.

COLLEGE CLIP! Felt like this play perfectly embodied the expectations of a field-side corner.

As a field side corner you not only have more communication responsibilities and coverage rules. But you must also be more physical to serve as a force player in the run game and take on blocks in the screen game.

@mbakwe does a great job of knowing the down & distance, getting downhill, evading the block, staying outside and delivering a strong tackle to shut down the screen.
