Ask Dr. Karen Cheung what her lab is building, and she starts with a longstanding gap in women's health.

Her team at @eceubc and @sbme_ubc is developing a new class of Canadian-made technology that shrinks an entire diagnostic laboratory onto a biosensor chip. Small enough for a clinic, a field backpack, or a drawer at home.

The novelty isn't just in shrinking the instrument, but also in reducing production costs. Mass production, like the Bluetooth chip in a phone that costs a couple of cents, makes a chip cheap in a way a delicate benchtop instrument can never be. By changing the chemistry on the surface of these chips, entirely different biomarkers can be tracked: from hormones, to brain-injury markers. The engineering underneath stays the same; only the top layer is retuned.

This work brings together Dr. Karen Cheung and her team, Dr. Govind Kaigala, Dr. Sudip Shekhar, and Dr. Lukas Chrostowski (co-founders of Dream Photonics Inc.), with research contributions from Dr. Cheryl Wellington on neurological biomarkers. In February 2026, the project secured over $7.1 million from Pacific Economic Development Canada to push the platform toward field-deployable, dual-use applications.

This is what sponsored research looks like when it's working: a partnership with the funding and momentum to carry an idea from the bench toward the clinic and the field.

Meet Henry Ly, an @ECEUBC Computer Engineering student who completed a semester abroad in Melbourne at @Monash_Uni through the @GoGlobalUBC program! 🇦🇺

"As an exchange student, you are constantly aware that your time in that place is limited. I was very motivated to make the most of the opportunities available to me and experience as much as I could."

Henry has also completed co-op terms with the Mark Anthony Group and @AMD as a data engineer and in an ASIC emulation and prototyping role.

Dr. Joseph Salfi, @ECEUBC Assistant Professor, and a team of collaborators from @UBCQuantumScience are proposing a solution to a key hurdle in quantum networking: a device that can "translate" microwave to optical signals and vice versa.

“It’s like finding a translator that gets nearly every word right, keeps the message intact and adds no background chatter,” says study author Mohammad Khalifa, who conducted the research during his PhD.

This technology clears a major roadblock in quantum computing.

Eventually, quantum networks could enable virtually unbreakable online security, GPS that works indoors, and the power to tackle problems beyond today’s reach such as designing new medicines or predicting weather with dramatically improved accuracy.

💫 Meet Ananya Swaminathan, one of our #UBCAPSCStars! 💫

Ananya accomplished so much during her undergrad with @ECEUBC. From leading @UBCThunderbikes to co-founding a startup that reduces plastic degradation time using fungi.

Ananya wasn't just a UBC Engineering student, she was also a Teaching Assistant, Council Director, Sr. Orientation Leader and AMS representative.

Happy spring, ECE! 🌸 by @eceubc

“My undergrad was heavy on theory- I did a dual degree in Math and Computer Science - so for my master’s, I wanted something more hands-on to build on that foundation. That’s when I found out about ECE, specifically UBC’s Master of Engineering (MEng) program, which stood out to me for its practicality and flexibility.”

ECE asked Faridah Akinotcho her experience in ECE, future research plans, and advice for ECE students. Read the full interview at ece.ubc.ca/exploring-software-innovation-faridahs-journey-in-ece by @eceubc
