ECHO.NINE FEATURED READ

Some books entertain you.

Some make you stop, reflect, and look at your own life a little differently.

Learning to Survive: Finding Strength in a Life That Tried to Break Me by Wayne George is one we believe is worth your time.

This is more than a story about surviving a difficult childhood. It is about choices, resilience, the people who step into our lives at the right time, and what becomes possible when we refuse to let where we started determine where we finish.

There are lessons here for leaders, parents, mentors, and anyone who has ever had to find strength in circumstances they did not choose.

And judging by the early reader response, the message is connecting.

If the themes we talk about here at Echo.Nine resonate with you — leadership, growth, resilience, purpose, and becoming something greater than your circumstances — take a look at this one.

The links to order are in our bio.

Read it.
Think about it.
Then pass it to someone who might need the message.

A hard chapter doesn’t get to write your ending.

Some seasons test everything you thought you had figured out. When you’re dealing with loss, failure, or starting over, it can be hard to believe life still has something good ahead.

That’s why the message in this reel matters. When you’re hurting, it’s easy to judge your whole life by the chapter you’re standing in.

Give yourself some grace. Learn what you can, lean on the people who care about you, and take the next right step. Small decisions still count when life is heavy.

There’s a leadership lesson here for how we treat others, too. The person struggling in front of you has a story you may know very little about. Ask how they’re doing. Listen to the answer. Hold them accountable while helping them find a way forward.

One mistake shouldn’t erase years of effort. One difficult season shouldn’t convince someone they have nothing left to offer.

Sometimes your belief in a person helps them find the strength to try again. Remember that when someone needs another chance, including yourself.

Keep your faith. Trust God with what you can’t see, and take responsibility for what you can do today.

Leadership means having the discipline to keep moving through your own hard chapter and the compassion to help someone else through theirs.

There are still people to meet, things to learn, and good you can do.

Keep turning the page.

Your kid is eight. You’re supposed to be the adult.

A parent runs onto the field yelling about an illegal block. A coach tries to calm him down and reminds him there’s one referee trying to catch everything. Then the parent threatens to knock a child out if it happens again.

Now the adults are exchanging threats at an eight-year-old flag football game.

That’s piss poor parenting and piss poor leadership. Whatever happened on that play, threatening somebody’s child is inexcusable.

These kids are learning the fundamentals, teamwork, sportsmanship, and how to handle frustration. They should get to enjoy competing without wondering which adult is going to lose control over the next call.

Winning feels good. Losing can teach you something. Both are part of playing sports. Your child doesn’t have to win every game to have a good experience or become a better player.

Parents, check yourselves. This is their game. Don’t make them carry your ego onto the field.

Leadership lesson: You’re teaching from the sidelines whether you realize it or not. If you expect kids to respect officials, control their emotions, and handle disappointment, give them an example they can follow.

Be the parent they’re proud to see on the sideline.

You never know what someone is going through. And sometimes, the smallest act of kindness can make the biggest difference in their life.

We live in a world where everyone seems to be moving a hundred miles an hour. We're focused on our responsibilities, our deadlines, our problems, and everything we need to accomplish before the day is over.

And somewhere along the way, we can become so focused on what we're doing that we stop noticing the people around us.

The Sailor who's suddenly become quiet. The coworker who isn't acting like themselves. The friend who keeps saying they're fine, even though something tells you they're not.

Sometimes, the most important thing you can do as a leader is simply pay attention.

You don't need to know someone's entire story to recognize that they might be struggling. And you certainly don't need a title, rank, or position of authority to make a difference.

Make the phone call. Sit beside someone who's having a difficult day. Listen long enough for them to tell you how they're really doing. Offer to help without expecting anything in return.

And when someone tells you they're struggling, resist the urge to immediately fix everything. Sometimes what they need most isn't advice or another solution. They need to know someone genuinely cares.

Here's something I've learned after decades of leadership: People may not remember every decision you made, every accomplishment you achieved, or every award you received. But they'll remember the moments when you showed up for them when they needed someone most.

That's the kind of leadership that leaves a lasting impact.

And here's the part I hope everyone remembers. You don't have to change someone's entire life to make a difference. Sometimes you just need to make their day a little better.

The Echo: When you see an opportunity to care, act on it. Be the reason someone feels less alone today.

One person showed compassion. Then others followed.

A woman with cancer is having her head shaved, and the tears start flowing. The barber has been talking with her. Then he lifts the clippers and begins shaving his own head.

A man waiting nearby joins in. Then another barber does the same.

One gesture becomes several people showing their support in a way she can see and feel.

We can’t hear their conversation, but there’s something powerful in watching people recognize a painful moment and choose to meet it with love. They each find a way to stand beside her.

This is the kind of leadership we need more of. Someone notices another person struggling, takes the first step, and gives others an example to follow.

We all have opportunities to do that. Make the call. Sit beside someone who’s having a hard day. Listen long enough for them to tell you how they’re really doing. Offer something specific that makes their day a little easier.

You don’t need to know someone’s whole story to treat them with compassion.

Leadership lesson: Pay attention to people. When you see an opportunity to care, act on it. Your example might help someone else find their own way to show up.

Be the reason someone feels less alone today.

You can be scared and still take the shot.

An archer holds her bow at full draw, tears running down her face. She releases the arrow, hits dead center, and her expression shifts into what looks like relief and disbelief.

We don’t know the story behind those tears. It could be pressure, fear of losing, or something we can’t see. But in that moment, she follows through.

Somebody reading this is carrying that same kind of pressure right now. You’re thinking about everything that could go wrong, how people might react, and what happens if you fail. You’ve played it out so many times that you’re exhausted before you’ve even acted.

Bring your attention back to what you can do right now.

You can’t shoot the other competitor’s arrow. You can’t decide what the crowd thinks. You can prepare, make your best decision, and follow through on the action in front of you.

That might be a difficult conversation, an application, asking for help, or finally starting something you’ve been putting off.

Leadership lesson: When the pressure builds, focus on the next action you can influence. Help your people do the same. Give them something clear to work toward instead of letting every possible outcome consume their attention.

You don’t have to solve your whole future in this moment.

Take a breath. Take the shot.

Sometimes, becoming who God created you to be requires letting go of who you used to be.

Think about the snake shedding its skin. It doesn't shed because something is wrong with it. It sheds because it's growing, and what once covered and protected it can no longer accommodate what it's becoming.

There's a powerful lesson in that for all of us.

We carry things through life that were never meant to stay with us forever. Old wounds. Regrets. Anger. Bitterness. Fear. Unhealthy relationships. Destructive habits. And sometimes, even the guilt and shame of decisions we've already been forgiven for.

We hold on to these things because they're familiar. They've become part of our story, and somewhere along the way, we start believing they're part of our identity.

But your past is something you've experienced. It is not who you are destined to become.

Scripture reminds us in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old has passed away, and the new has come.

What a powerful reminder that God doesn't call us to remain prisoners of the people we used to be. He calls us to grow, to change, and to become something new.

But transformation requires something of us. We have to be willing to release the resentment, confront the habits, forgive where we can, seek forgiveness where we should, and stop carrying the weight of things that are keeping us from moving forward.

And sometimes that process is uncomfortable. Growth often is.

You cannot step fully into a new season of life while insisting on carrying everything that weighed you down in the last one.

So shed the bitterness. Release the shame. Let go of the fear. Learn from your mistakes, make peace with what you cannot change, and have the courage to begin again.

You are not required to remain the person your circumstances once forced you to become.

Every sunrise is another opportunity to grow. Another opportunity to make better decisions. Another opportunity to become more of the person God created you to be.

The Echo: Leave behind what no longer belongs in your life. God is not finished with you yet.

Shake their hand. Then go earn the win.

Before a high school football game in Pasadena, the teams meet at midfield for the coin toss. The referee tells them to shake hands, and one team refuses to step forward. He steps in and warns them that a 15-yard penalty is coming if they don’t.

Good on that official. He recognized a problem, stated the expectation, and made the consequence clear. He held the standard right there in the moment.

You can have a fierce rivalry and still show basic respect. You can spend all week preparing to beat somebody and still shake their hand before kickoff. Put that intensity into your preparation, your effort, and your execution.

And there’s a coaching question here, too. We don’t know what these players were told beforehand. If a coach encouraged this, that’s piss-poor leadership. If the players made that decision themselves, their coaches need to address it. Either way, the adults leading this team have a teaching opportunity.

These young people will carry lessons from football into the rest of their lives. Teach them how to compete while keeping control of themselves, especially around people they don’t particularly like.

Leadership lesson: Set expectations early and uphold them when they’re tested. Help your people manage their emotions well enough to make sound decisions. Being fired up comes with a responsibility to stay disciplined.

Your opponent doesn’t have to be your friend to deserve your respect.

Know your limits. Your anger won’t change them.

We don’t know what happened before this clip. What we see is a girl repeatedly swinging at a boy who initially dodges and steps back. He eventually strikes back, and she goes down. She later gets up and walks away, but we don’t know what happened afterward.

That situation could have ended very badly.

Being angry, feeling disrespected, or having a crowd around you can push you into a confrontation you’re completely unprepared to handle. You don’t know the other person’s strength, experience, or how far the situation might escalate.

And once you start swinging, you lose control over how the other person responds.

That applies to everyone. Keep your hands to yourself. Give yourself enough room to think before your pride makes the decision.

For young people especially, walking away in front of your peers can feel difficult. You worry about looking scared or hearing somebody run their mouth. Let them talk. You still have a life to live after that crowd goes home.

Leadership lesson: Be honest about your capabilities and thoughtful about your choices. Have enough discipline to leave a confrontation you can avoid. And if you’re standing in that crowd, help someone back away instead of encouraging them to keep going.

Protect your future before you protect your pride.

The difference between people who achieve their dreams and those who give up on them isn't always talent, intelligence, or opportunity. Sometimes, it's simply the refusal to quit.

Life is going to knock you down. You're going to face rejection, disappointment, setbacks, and moments when everything you've worked for seems to be slipping through your fingers.

People will tell you no. Doors will close. Opportunities will disappear. And there will be times when you question whether all the effort, sacrifice, and struggle are even worth it.

Keep going.

Here's something I've learned through years of facing adversity: Failure isn't always a sign that you're heading in the wrong direction. Sometimes it's the very experience that teaches you what you need to know to succeed.

Resilience isn't about never getting knocked down. It's about finding the strength to get back up when staying down would be so much easier.

Persistence isn't blindly doing the same thing over and over. It's having the humility to recognize what isn't working, the courage to change your approach, and the determination to keep pursuing what matters.

And when someone tells you no, remember that their answer doesn't necessarily determine your future. Sometimes it simply means you need to find another way, another opportunity, or another door.

Don't confuse a closed door with the end of your journey.

Some of the greatest accomplishments in life are waiting on the other side of the moments when we feel like quitting. But you'll never discover what's possible if you allow temporary defeat to become a permanent decision.

So chase that dream. Pursue that opportunity. Take the risk. Put in the work. And when you stumble, learn from it, adjust, and get moving again.

You may not control every obstacle in your path, but you can control how you respond to it.

Never let the fear of failing become greater than your desire to succeed.

The Echo: Failure is an event, not your identity. Get up, adapt, and keep moving forward.

The security guard kept his composure. The lady at the pool table brought the applause.

Two men are arguing with security when one headbutts the guard. He pushes him back and creates some space. Then the friend comes at him, the guard responds, and both men eventually end up on the floor.

Even as one gets back up and tries again, the guard stays calm and alert.

Meanwhile, this woman is still clapping like he just sank the eight ball. What are we doing? 😂

But the guard’s composure is worth paying attention to. He’s been hit, two people are coming at him, and others are gathering around. That’s a lot happening at once. Keeping your head in that situation matters.

Anger can get you so focused on proving a point that you stop paying attention to what’s happening around you. Your friend joins in, the situation escalates, and now several people are dealing with the consequences of your ego.

Leadership lesson: Keep enough control of yourself to keep thinking. Pay attention as the situation changes. And if you’re the friend, help your buddy back away before his bad decision becomes yours too.

You shouldn’t need to know how well someone can fight to treat them with respect.

Don’t get so focused on what’s missing that you overlook what’s already helping you through life.

This reel gives us a reason to pause and recognize what we already have. The people who show up. The opportunities we’ve been given. The ordinary moments we rush through because we’re already thinking about what comes next.

You can be ambitious and grateful at the same time. Keep working toward that next goal. Just take a moment to appreciate the people and experiences that helped you reach this one.

Think about someone who believed in you before you gave them much reason to. Someone who answered the phone, offered a hand, or stayed when things got difficult. Have you told them what that meant to you?

Leadership lesson: Make your appreciation specific. Tell people what they did and why it mattered. Recognize the effort that quietly keeps your team moving. Give credit where it belongs, and let people hear from you when they’re doing something right.

Gratitude becomes meaningful when it changes how we treat people.

There’s probably someone in your life who deserves more than an unspoken thank-you. Let them hear it today.
