🏭⚡💧#ECLAC and the United Nations Regional Commissions Sign the Xi’an Declaration to Advance Secure, Affordable, Resilient and Inclusive Energy Systems.

The Executive Secretaries of the five Regional Commissions signed the declaration at the conclusion of the Fifteenth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development in Xi’an, China, where ECLAC presented its work on energy planning and integration, and critical minerals management ⛏️💎

In the declaration they establish seven priorities:
1. Strengthening energy security and system resilience;
2. Accelerating the deployment of clean and renewable energy;
3. Advancing energy efficiency and demand-side solutions;
4. Harnessing digitalization and innovation for the energy transition;
5. Fostering sustainable value chains and the sustainable and transparent management of energy resources and critical minerals for the energy transition;
6. Ensuring a just and inclusive transition;
7. Mobilizing investment and finance at scale.

The Executive Secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs highlighted that Latin America and the Caribbean generates more than 60 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources. He stressed that the energy transition must transform the way economies grow through productive development policies, regional cooperation and stronger institutional capacities.

🗨️To harness the benefits of the transition, countries need productive development policies that strengthen local capacities, foster innovation, support workforce development and link energy investments to national and regional value chains. This requires strong institutions and effective governance.

🌿🌎 Latin America and the Caribbean is home to more than 40% of the world's biodiversity. But is the region investing enough to protect it?
According to a new study by ECLAC and the IDB, current financing covers barely 10% of the resources needed annually to conserve, restore and sustainably use the region's biodiversity. The annual financing gap is estimated at US$ 152.987 billion.

📘 The publication “The Biodiversity Financing Gap in Latin America and the Caribbean: Needs, Flows, and Mobilization Strategies Toward 2030” quantifies this challenge, identifies investment priorities and proposes strategies and a road map to mobilize resources by 2030.

Are we building the cities we want?

🏙️🌱🌎 On 31 October, World Cities Day, we reflect on the challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean in building more sustainable, inclusive and productive cities.

🚲🌳🏘️ Building sustainable cities means much more than creating green spaces. It requires making housing more affordable, improving basic services, mobility and public spaces, expanding economic opportunities and making better use of existing urban assets and infrastructure.

📚 To mark this day, we invite you to explore three ECLAC publications that examine progress towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, the challenges of the 2030 Agenda and opportunities offered by the circular urban economy.

📘Investment in leave policies, universal childcare services and long-term care in Latin America and the Caribbean could generate approximately 31.3 million jobs in the region, according to a joint report by #ECLAC and @ilo.org. The formal sector would account for 88% of these jobs.

📊 The document presents investment scenarios for 23 countries in the region, developed using the ILO’s Care Policy Investment Simulator, which has been updated in collaboration with @eclac_un. This tool enables the estimation of investment needs and their potential effects on employment, income and tax revenue.

🤝 Within the framework of the Decade of Action established in the #TlatelolcoCommitment, investing in care is a priority for accelerating the achievement of substantive gender equality and a caring society.

🌐👶👵🏽🧑‍🦽On 29 October, the International Day of Care and Support, proclaimed by the United Nations, we are called upon to accelerate progress toward substantive gender equality and the care society through clear strategies, significant investments, and regional cooperation. ECLAC considers progress towards the care society one of the essential transformations needed to achieve more productive, inclusive and sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

🌎 The Tlatelolco Commitment, adopted at the most recent session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, established a Decade of Action to Accelerate the Achievement of Substantive Gender Equality and the Care Society. 🌿 How can Latin America and the Caribbean close its biodiversity financing gap?

📊 A new IDB–ECLAC study launched at #COP17Armenia estimates that the region needs $170 billion annually to conserve, restore, and sustainably use biodiversity. At current financing levels, this leaves an estimated annual financing gap of $153 billion, equivalent to 2.1% of regional GDP.

Closing this gap will require more than additional funding. It means realigning financial flows and incentives toward nature-positive investments, mobilizing private capital, and integrating biodiversity into economic and investment decisions.

🌎 Discover how the region can accelerate biodiversity finance and turn commitments into action by 2030.
