A Wall System Designed by Nature. Healthier and more sustainable living combined with exceptional energy efficiency.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Konštrukčne a materiálovo eliminuje materiály s vysokou uhlíkovou stopou na absolútne minimum, zastúpené čisto len v podobe nízkych základových pásov a základovej dosky.

Materials.

The choices for construction materials and finishes at Wooden House were of upmost importance.
Here’s a summary of some of the main elements.

1. Straw and timber prefabricated panels from @eco.cocon
This system takes all the wonderful benefits of building with straw bale, such as its low carbon footprint and insulation properties, compressing it into panels to utilise the simplicity of a prefabricated timber frame construction.
We are really excited to build with this system again as soon as the chance arises.

2. Clay plaster
The straw wall build up requires breathable finishes to allow the movement of any moisture through the wall. This mitigates the risk of damp and rot by preventing moisture building up at sealed or non breathable surfaces whilst still keeping an airtight fabric which reached near Passivehouse standard for the air test. It also creates a warmer, more natural feeling finish, catching the light as the clay undulates across the wall.

3, 4 & 5. Cornish Cedar Cladding and Oak Frame
Sawn from cedar trees felled from our clients land, Wooden House stays true to its name in its full envelope of cedar cladding with an oak frame by @postandbeamuk forming the balconies recessed into the overall form.

6. Slate and Cornish Granite
The beautiful, wild landscaping brings permeable slate paved areas and large granite boulders in to create zones around the dwelling.

The project is now live on our website, take a look via https://www.kastarchitects.com/work/wooden-house/

Wooden House.

As you approach the dwelling appears domestic in its scale, privet hedge and gravel garden path, yet once you cross the threshold the building becomes seemingly cocooned by the abundant, wild landscaping surrounding it.

The project has always prioritised healthy, natural and sustainable construction. Not least in its use of timber, straw and clay as the primary construction materials but equally in its minimal use of plastic and complete elimination of petrochemical insulation.

The clients commitment to wilding the spaces around the building, through landscape and integrated wildlife boxes within the cladding is proof that residential spaces can be shared harmoniously with nature.

We often hear that the market isn’t ready for bio-based housing. ETC Hyllie tells a different story. Maybe the market is more ready than we think.

Long before the building was completed, people were already backing the idea behind it. They believed housing could be built differently — with natural materials, lower emissions, and a stronger focus on the quality of everyday living. Today, the building stands as proof that those people weren’t alone.

The most interesting question isn’t whether bio-based housing is possible. The question is whether we’ve underestimated how many people are looking for it. If Hyllie teaches us anything, it’s that the demand for better housing may be larger than the industry assumes.

When the system is right, the build is fast. 🏗️⚡

You can always tell when a building system is designed well. It’s not when the project is finished—it’s when the crew is moving fast, nothing is waiting, and every element lands exactly where it should.

At our Hyllie project in Malmö, that moment happened floor by floor. 👇

✨ The Process: ETC Byggentreprenad craned off-site, pre-assembled EcoCocon wall blocks directly into position.
📏 The Result: Millimetre precision. Exact fit. The build just moved.

That’s the power of good prefabrication. The hard part is done before the materials even reach the site.

Bio-based construction doesn't become mainstream just by being a "good idea." It takes over when it fits seamlessly into the workflows builders already use. When it arrives ready. When it goes up fast.

At Hyllie, it did exactly that. 💚

Straw in a 12-storey building raises two questions immediately. What happens in a fire? 🔥 And what does it sound like to live there?

Both have answers. Real ones, with test data behind them.
EcoCocon panels are compressed to 115 kg/m³. Under fire, the straw chars and forms an insulating layer that slows combustion. The standalone panel is certified REI 45. With finish layers, performance goes higher.

On acoustics, Sweden holds builders to one of the strictest standards in Europe, measuring down to 50 Hz. EcoCocon wall assemblies are independently tested from 30 to 65 dB, depending on configuration.

At Hyllie, both were engineered together from day one. The full story of how is in the latest blog post: Link in Bio

The challenge wasn’t making a 12-storey straw building stand up. It was making sure it didn’t lift off.
By replacing concrete with CLT and EcoCocon straw panels, the building became dramatically lighter than a conventional 12-storey residential building. Great for reducing embodied carbon. Less straightforward when you’re designing the structure.

At this scale, bio-based construction isn’t simply a material swap. It changes the structural logic of the entire building. Engineers must rethink how forces move through the structure, how the building behaves during construction, and how it connects to the foundations below.

The result is ETC Hyllie in Malmö: 12 storeys, 65 apartments, a CLT structure, and EcoCocon Straw Wall System.

And it stands exactly where it should.

Last week, we shared another piece of the engineering story behind the project — how the team rethought one of the most carbon-intensive parts of any building: the foundation. Using basalt reinforcement and a custom concrete mix, they achieved an estimated 70% reduction in foundation-related CO₂ emissions.

Worth reading alongside this video.

Come walk through the tallest straw building in the world with Paul Lynch, who helped bring our panels to this project because he has dreamed of a building like this for years 🌾 This weekend in Malmö, on opening day, that dream finally had a front door.

You know what the best part is? ETC Hyllie only exists because people wanted it. Not a big developer.
It was crowd-funded — built on the belief of ordinary people who wanted to prove that low-carbon construction is possible, long before the banks did. The demand came first.

The only question left is who builds the next one. 👇

AKF has officially welcomed residents to Denmark’s first straw-based residential development. 🌾

Søbredden in Kirkebjerg Søpark includes 13 terraced homes built with the prefabricated EcoCocon straw wall system alongside timber cladding, hemp and seagrass-based materials.

Part of Denmark’s “4 to 1 Planet” initiative, the project marks the first time a professional Danish developer has delivered a full residential development using timber-straw-based construction systems.
The project achieved an independently verified carbon footprint of 8.1 kg CO₂eq/m²/year, dropping to 5.4 kg CO₂eq/m²/year using updated 2025 emission factors. That is 53% lower than the Danish housing average.

More importantly, all 13 homes sold out before completion.
Projects like this highlight something the industry is rediscovering: people respond differently to natural, bio-based living environments.
Indoor acoustics, humidity regulation, material tactility, and overall living comfort have a direct impact on how homes feel — and ultimately on their desirability.

The real challenge now is to accelerate the number of developers capable of delivering low-carbon housing repeatedly, commercially, and at scale. 🏗️ by @createrra_architecture
