Today is Dia de Los Muertos, and beautiful holiday to celebrate our loved ones who have passed on. The holiday is marked with ofrendas, the alters displaying the photos of deceased friends and family, along with other key components including their favorite foods and drinks, pan de muerto, and marigold flowers (cempasuchil) among other decorations.

Dia de Los Muertos also is marked by the return of the migrating monarch butterflies from the central and eastern US to central Mexico. The timing is no mistake, the great great grandmother butterfly that left Mexico and created multiple generations of monarchs who never returned until this generation is truly a significant representation of the return of the souls of loved ones for this holiday.

Evie: spiders are amazing, we should do a spider shirt.

Me: uh people have feelings about spiders…

Evie: spiders are literally the perfect pest control, plus some of them are actually really cute!

Me: still not sold

Evie: jumping spiders can recognize human faces. Oh and the beautiful parachute spider is actually really beautiful! Did you know daddy long legs aren’t actually spiders at all? They are harvestmen, which is an arachnid but not a spider. They aren’t venomous, which is a requirement of being a spider. So all spiders are venomous but most can’t kill you, their toxins are mostly to kill their tiny little prey, not to harm people.

Me: *blink blink*

Anyways check out our new spider shirt because Evie is really in charge here and I just take creative direction from her!

PS- it’s literally in sewing now, so order online and I’ll ship it next week so you’ll have it before Halloween!
