@talkswithdrsesay The record isn’t broken; change is just overdue. It’s World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme is ‘Mental Health at Work’. As a women’s and gynaecological health advocate, I want to highlight the link between menstrual health and mental health, and how they impact each other, and in turn their effect in the workplace. Conditions like PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) can cause debilitating mental health symptoms so severe that 34% of those diagnosed have attempted to end their lives. (In comparison, 3% of the overall population has attempted to end their life, making this statistic particularly significant). Stress, including workplace stress, can also affect periods, disrupting their regularity and exacerbating symptoms, and in severe cases, stopping them altogether. Additionally, period symptoms like severe menstrual pain are closely linked to higher rates of depression and anxiety. It’s never just a period. This week, news emerged that a school in England is requesting proof of period pain, which is disappointing. How do you quantify pain when it is subjective? Conditions like fibroids, adenomyosis, and endometriosis can cause severe pain, impacting work performance, mental health, and overall well-being. By understanding menstrual health and adopting supportive workplace policies, we can positively influence both mental health and productivity. It’s a win-win—a no-brainer. So, what can be done in the workplace to improve outcomes? • Believe staff – pain is invisible and subjective. • Offer flexible work arrangements. • Provide education and awareness. • Ensure access to comfortable, private spaces, and free period products. • Offer paid leave and sick days. • Accommodate special needs. • Flexibility with dress code. • Engage in policy changes like menstrual leave. • Regularly seek feedback through surveys. • Promote a stigma-free environment. Have I missed anything? Please share and let me know in the comments. ♥️🙏🏾 #justaperiod #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #menstrualhealth by @efficacy_eva
In celebration of both National Poetry Day and the start of Black History Month, we are excited to share Amanda Inniss's @amandaeinness poignant poem, "Leave Me Grief," (swipe to read) featured in the newly published Black Grief and Healing, edited by Yansie Rolston @efficacy_eva and Patrick Vernon OBE @vernon_patrick. Through moving reflections on events such as Grenfell and the pandemic, Black Grief and Healing brings to light the often-overlooked suffering of Black communities, shaped by systemic inequality and collective trauma, whilst also offering valuable moments of strength and healing. Swipe to see what early readers have been saying, and head to our blog (link in bio) to read co-editor Patrick Vernon's thoughts on the Home Office scandal!
