Celebrating Ja’Quan, who started oboe online (!) with me in 2021, and yesterday performed to world leaders alongside Idris Elba at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting with @abysomusic and the joyous @danielbartholomewpoyser ! 🌍

We met in person for the first time in 2023, and his drive and curiosity around music and the oboe has developed each year leading to remarkable progress.

Alongside oboe, Ja’Quan is an extraordinary steel pan player, arranger, composer and conductor. In amazing news, he has decided to study music at university in London next year! 🎶🎶🎶

Huge thank you to @abysomusic and Antigua for hosting me this week with @commonwealthresounds and making these special connections possible. 🇦🇬☀️ by @ellenwilkinson_creates

Meet Ellen Wilkinson 🎶

Antigua holds a special place in Ellen’s life. This November, the oboist and arts educator returns with The Commonwealth Resounds for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. She will perform with the World Orchestra, coach young wind players of the @abysomusic and lead poetry and music workshops.

Learn more about what Ellen hopes to learn from Antiguan musicians, what musical collaboration means to her and why she wants Commonwealth leaders to recognise the importance of music in young people’s lives.

Meet the musicians: 🎶
Introducing oboist Ellen Wilkinson and singer Harriet Cameron.

Step into an immersive performance where music, words and movement come together to create a living portrait of a magical London haven.

Inspired by the Kenwood Ladies' Pond on Hampstead Heath, oboist Ellen Wilkinson and singer Harriet Cameron weave together classical repertoire by Vaughan Williams, Britten and Strauss with improvisation and soundscapes, on the theme of water and sun.

Ellen and Harriet move between artistic mediums as fluidly as the water they evoke, with original writing and classic nature poems by Mary Oliver adding texture to the music and improvised movement giving dimension to the space.

This shared artistic meeting point explores themes of community, nature, freedom and human connection. As the performance unfolds, audience members are invited into subtle moments of participation, recreating the conversations, atmosphere and unique sense of belonging found beside the water.

Such a privilege to play cor anglais in Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony alongside @welshnat_opera_cencym, with @ryanbmcadams.

More luscious music (heightened by heatwave) surely does not exist?!

A lovely final project for my first year of study @rwcmd, made ever more fun by @jennyclare_ ❤️‍🔥 by @ellenwilkinson_creates

Such a special evening performing my poetry for the first time! 🖤

Poems, essays and dance interwoven with a theme of ‘motion’. My ideal event?!

For a long while it seemed like bipolar had taken away my motivation for writing, so to perform ‘Abundance to Rot’, which was written in the aftermath of my diagnosis, felt a healthy reminder that all parts of ourselves are interconnected.

So joyous to meet all of the other artists - your work was beautiful. Huge thanks to @thepoeticofflicence and @leeds_lit_fest for putting together such a gorgeous event @hydeparkbookclub .

Bring on the zine! ❤️‍🔥
