Emily Cheng’s art is a portrait gallery of the Soul in its multifarious manifestations. Each painting is a separate incarnation, inheriting a memory cultivated by its own special cross-pollination of cultural traditions. The richness of imageries her art delivers is itself a feast for the eye, and the pleasure they stir in art lovers direct them to other moments of delight, as they recognize figurative details from the global world of art.

Watch Emily Cheng and Christopher Y. Lew in conversation for ‘In the Weave of Worlds,’ now in its final week at Silverlens New York.

Geometry is only one of the many frameworks through which the mystery of the cosmos manifests. How otherwise might the design of the Sacred be revealed is a constant query behind Emily Cheng’s artistic pursuit. In her paintings, one finds both geomancy and geometry, DNA spirals and Daoist talisman, electromagnetic grids and qi-energy network.

SILVERLENS, NY til May 2! by @emilychengart

NEW YORK: Emily Cheng: In the Weave of Worlds, now on view.

Emily Cheng’s painting career has been a continuous search for visual methods that render the Sacred visually graspable.
Spiritual art’s best-known method is probably sacred geometry, an ancient practice that today continues to strongly influence the art and architecture of the Islamic and Christian world. Geometry is a language of ideal forms known to all cultures, and to a varying extent, a tool used universally. However, even though the rational basis of geometry allows it to make universal claims, these are not “total” claims.

For Cheng, knowledge ancient and modern are equivalent tools for creating a grammar and an artistic language showing how humans may speak to the cosmos and communicate with the world at large.

One Mo time. by @emilychengart

I like derangement, especially matched with accuracy and a mystic precision: that’s American Chinese Emily Cheng, bringing to us a sort of emotional stillness, reaching tones of my beloved Agnes Pelton. All with a touch of science descriptions, reminding to non Euclidean geometries, “warm holes” or modified gravity models
Mesmerizing!
