POSTS STORIES REELS
Emma Morris is a textile artist driven by the exploration of nature and the subtle textures of everyday life. Her work blends traditional techniques of natural dyeing with slow stitch embroidery to evoke both familiarity and curiosity. Through textiles she aims to create spaces that invite realisation, encouraging viewers to engage with moments of beauty often overlooked and taken for granted. Each piece is a dialogue between observation and imagination, expressing her commitment to capture the beauty in the fleeting and the ordinary. She collects and curates found objects and presses and preserves plant life to dye with and sketch that eventually become accurate botanical representations in her works Emma has recently started exhibiting her works nationally after a period teaching embroidery in the community and is currently undertaking Level 4 City & Guilds in Hand Embroidery to become a Master Practitioner of Embroidery. by @emmamorris10_
Falling down a research rabbit hole 🐇 My second module with @school_of_stitch City & Guilds - Level 4 - ‘Master Practitioner in Embroidery’ course is ‘Journey’. I’ve decided to zone in on my personal physical ‘journey’ to where I am today. With so many amazing travel adventures under my belt I simply couldn’t choose a single trip or holiday! Born in London, a move to Kent and then to Gloucester in the late 70’s. The culture shock to a Victorian village school with outside toilets and wooden desks will never leave me 😳 I’ve got 50+ years to now try and represent, convert into a coherent design and come up with a final piece, experimenting and finessing on the way. What a great time I’m going to have 😀 What joy it’s been rummaging through mums photos, examining every handmade stitch from my christening gown and unpacking my wedding dress. All now considered Vintage 😂 like me 🤪 #textileartist #fineart #mystitchjourney by @emmamorris10_
Just under a month to go ! Here’s a quick glimpse of some of my work on show with @sarahgwyer, @stinamacdo, @gracegatleytextiles, @suzec73 at @thegateartspace as part of our collective @glosstitch The Gate Art Space @thegateartspace 21 Westgate Street, Gloucester 10th - 22 November Mon-Sat 10-4 | Sun 11-4 #textiles #textilefineart #fineart by @emmamorris10_
Day 29 • #septtextilelove with @seam_collective is ‘GROWTH’ I’ve taken this prompt literally as most of my work details a plant theme 🌱 in one way or another.. either figuratively or in a more abstract way. I’ve always been drawn to plants and the majority of my work starts life in my garden. I press plant life to use at later dates, such as winter when there isn’t much around. Another interpretation of ‘GROWTH’ is personal growth. I’ve used this last year to start my embroidery qualification with @school_of_stitch and exhibition entries. Next on the list is the first joint exhibition for @glosstitch in November at the gallery @thegateartspace . Lots of publicity for that coming up 😊 🪡 🧵 by @emmamorris10_
A rather prolific weekend on the 2 day screen printing workshop @theyardprintstudio . I wanted to have a series of prints I could sell alongside the textiles in our upcoming exhibition @glosstitch in November at @thegateartspace . Some are single colour, some 2 and some 3 colour. I was able to utilise the original drawings that I used to make the cyanotype & embroidery piece that will be exhibited in the exhibition. #screenprint #marine #illustration by @emmamorris10_
Day 19 • #septtextilelove with @seam_collective is ‘Collaboration’ The perfect opportunity to plug our upcoming exhibition. I do hope you can make it? Showing work from @stinamacdo @gracegatleytextiles @suzec73 @sarahgwyer we’d love to see you 👋🏻 Details in poster. #textilefineart #textiles #exhibition by @emmamorris10_
Day 10 • #septtextilelove with @seam_collective is ‘low impact’ I think I’m quite good at reducing my carbon footprint . I’ve always collected offcuts, scraps, odd ends. To me they’re not waste but POTENTIAL! My favourite way to reuse my embroidery thread ends is to fuse with dissolvable fabric (also offcuts). These larger pieces are perfect to fill in odd gaps in larger pieces of work. Because it’s fused together these pieces eventually become offcuts themselves and so the cycle ♻️ begins. #textileartist #recycle #textiles by @emmamorris10_
Day 9 • #septtextilelove with @seam_collective ‘Craft or Art’ I’m a day late for this prompt so I can announce this 📣which I think settles my opinion on the debate! Delighted to be taking part with this fab bunch for our inaugural exhibition with @gracegatleytextiles @stinamacdo @suzec73 @sarahgwyer + @emmamorris10_ @glosstitch is a collective of Gloucestershire textile artists all passionate about classifying textiles as art📣 Running 10-22 Nov @thegateartspace 21 Westgate St. Gloucester. Mon - Sat 10-4 • Sunday 11-4 by @emmamorris10_
Day 8 • #septtextilelove with @seam_collective is ‘inspiring exhibition’ This has been my year for visits! Bristol, Oxford and multiple trips to London for research. I would love to have the scale of opportunity to go REALLY big, the funding, the team 😂 we can but hope. All major galleries are now showing textiles as fine art and many dedicating themselves solely to textile exhibitions. I’m really looking forward to @glosstitch exhibition in November where our local collective of 5 artists will be showing.. more details on that in future posts 😉 #textileartists #textileartistsofinstagram #textileartist by @emmamorris10_
Day 7 of #septtextilelove with @seam_collective is ‘History’ This prompt was easy ! My lovely Nan, shown here in her ‘going away’ outfit that she made herself for honeymoon. She was a fantastic seamstress and knitter. We used to go into the London department stores and rummage in the remnants bin ( remember those) and I’d make ‘something’ out of what I’d spent my pocket money on. When I was older I would send a metre of fabric ( I was tiny then 😂)to her on a Monday and I’d have a cute dress for going out with that weekend 😉 She was one of my biggest cheerleaders, an amazing thrifter and where my love of textiles came from 🪡 #history #textiles #creative by @emmamorris10_
Day 6 • #septtextilelove with @seam_collective is ‘experiment’ Here is a collection of experiments I did for my first module with @school_of_stitch . I loved doing this and will take it forward and incorporate it further into my practice. Each ‘experiment’ has potential to become a further work or part of something bigger so it’s never a waste of time! #textiles #experiments #textileartist by @emmamorris10_
Day 5 • #septtextilelove with @seam_collective is ‘caring’ Oh my days! This one was tricky.. then I remembered the caring and nurturing environment of @theemmawillissewingstudio . All the lovely people I’ve met, been privileged to teach and what they taught me. I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 years there running slow stitch and embroidery classes for the local community and those wider afield. Arthritic hands moved, English lessons were encouraged and creativity celebrated. A place where the true meaning of ‘caring’ was embodied. All work shown students own. #textiles #creative #caring #community by @emmamorris10_
