#flashbackfriday

As I close out this chapter, looking back over my journey at Howard University, I want to take a moment to encourage whoever needs to hear this: don’t be afraid to start over. Don’t be ashamed about changing your mind or wanting to redirect your life or career. It’s okay to pivot and begin a new journey!

Often, we settle for what’s safe, overthinking scenarios until we talk ourselves out of taking a leap of faith. All I can say is I’m glad I took a chance and went back to school! While this was my second Master’s program, I felt more self-aware and approached challenges differently than I had before. The Mecca was truly a transformative experience that I believe has prepared me for what’s next. My faith is deeper, my mind is sharper, and my community is richer. The late nights and early mornings were worth it, the tears were worth it, and the isolation, though uncomfortable, was necessary.

So, I hope this encourages you to believe in yourself, take that leap, and make that change.

How can we confidently say, “We gon’ be alright” when life keeps pressing us?

Because we carry a treasure in clay jars.

In other words, God chose ordinary, imperfect people to carry His extraordinary power.

Life may press us, but it cannot crush what God is sustaining. Our hope isn’t found in the strength of the vessel. It’s found in the resurrection power of Christ within it.

Part 2 #HUMC26 One of the greatest gifts of Hampton is the reunion. 🫶🏾

Grateful for the relationships that remind me we are never called to do this work alone. There is something special about gathering with mentors, preaching giants, colleagues, my beloved brothers, and reconnecting with my sisters.

The fellowship, wisdom, laughter, and encouragement were exactly what my soul needed.

My heart and cup are full.❤️ #humc26 taken in Hampton University- Official by @ivybaptist

Part 1 #HUMC26 It’s been said before, but let me add my voice to the chorus: “There’s no place like Hampton”‼️

It may not be for everyone, but for over 10yrs, I have attended the Hampton Ministers’ Conference and it has been a sacred part of my spiritual formation. From powerful worship and preaching to pastoral and professional development, this convening continues to pour into me in ways that are difficult to put into words.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to pause, be renewed, and receive. 🙌🏾

Sis, we’re not meant to carry life alone. 🤍

This night was a reminder that healing happens in safe spaces, strength grows in community, and there is power in sacred sisterhood. Through worship, honest conversations about mental health, prayer, laughter, tears, and the Word, women came together to pour into one another and be reminded: you do not have to suffer in silence.

Thank you to every woman who showed up open, vulnerable, and ready for God to move. This was more than an event. It was ministry. ✨

Fourteen years ago today, I stood in the pulpit of my home church, First Baptist Church East End and preached my trial sermon, becoming a licensed minister.

I first discerned my call in the 8th grade and spent my high school years trying to understand what it meant to be called. After college I surrendered my plans and said yes, and began seminary (STVU) at 22 years old. April 29, 2012 marked a defining moment in a journey when I was licensed to preach the Gospel at 23.

At 36, I’m Grateful for a God who has been faithful through every season, through clarity and questioning, through growth and stretching. Every season requires a fresh yes and I’m striving to steward this calling with integrity, humility, and obedience.🙏🏾

I’m grateful for my village, those who saw me, covered me, corrected me, prayed for me, and stood beside me from the very beginning. I did not walk this journey alone. And just know I thank God for you! 🫶🏾

14 years later, I’m still here. And I’m still saying yes!🙌🏾 by @ivybaptist

On March 14, 2026, the Virginia General Assembly adjourned Sine Die, closing out my third legislative session.

This was a historic session, filled with meaningful moments, from attending the inauguration of Her Excellency, helping to advance important legislation, leading an incredible team, working alongside stakeholders and advocacy groups across the Commonwealth, and connecting directly with constituents. I was also honored to organize my church’s Social Justice Ministry’s 2nd Annual visit to the Capitol. Each experience stretched and strengthened me, reminding me why this work matters.

To everyone wondering if I’m working in my field, YES. Social work thrives in political spaces like this!

During Social Work Month, I’m especially mindful of the vital role social workers play in constituent services, policy research, and identifying systemic barriers.

While session has ended, the work continues, and it requires all of us. We can’t afford to say “I don’t do politics” when politics shapes our everyday lives.

Your voice matters; so let this also serve as a reminder that early voting in Virginia is open through April 18.

Vote YES to safeguard fair maps and keep power in the hands of the people 🗳️ ✊🏾 taken in Virginia General Assembly by @ivybaptist
