Happy Halloween from @crocs 🎃🐊 by @erin_sprague

Last week the @protectourwinters Board gathered for our first retreat, hosted by our partner @patagonia at their HQ in Ventura, CA. 🌊

It’s been a brutal stretch for climate. Rollbacks, uncertainty, and US emissions are going up even though clean energy is cheaper and faster to build than ever. The solutions exist. What’s missing is the willpower to deploy them, which is our focus at POW.

Our Board members are volunteers. They have companies to lead, families, Everest climbs, red carpet movie launches, a recent Olympic retirement, and more. They came prepared, asked the hard questions, and pushed us toward greater impact. Many paddled out for a stormy surf session before a morning of governance (respect!🏄‍♀️).

We left aligned on what comes next: more state and local wins, clean energy for data centers, protecting public lands, and fighting misinformation with trusted messengers and community connection.

I’m so grateful for their mentorship and support of our exceptional team. Thank you to our facilitator Patrick Flynn, and to the Patagonia crew for hosting us and setting the bar on environmental leadership. I returned to Colorado with a full notebook, sand in my suitcase, and conviction in our work for clean air and clean water. ❄️ by @erin_sprague

How do we turn a shared love of the outdoors into meaningful action?

In my conversation with @erin_sprague, CEO of @protectourwinters, we discussed the power of the outdoor community and why education is the first step toward effective climate advocacy.

You don’t need to know everything about energy, environmental policy, or government to get started. You can learn how decisions are made, who represents you, and how to participate.

With the November 3 election approaching, NOW is time to research the candidates and environmental issues on your ballot and make a voting plan.

You can find our conversation on What’s The Rusch and access voting resources at protectourwinters.org. For voting information go to vote.gov

Can culture help progress climate action? Protect Our Winters is leaning into the outdoor sports community for advocacy.

wild days with wonderful women 🛶🦭🐚🌊⚡️ by @erin_sprague

Summer is flying by, but we've got a new episode to remind you about the importance of WINTER! We sit down with Erin Sprague, CEO of @protectourwinters — the org turning outdoor people into climate advocates.
We get into how POW is mobilizing skiers, riders, and trail runners into a political force, what shrinking snowpack actually means for mountain towns like ours, and what any of us who live for winter can do beyond just recycling our beer cans.
Also: Erin once ran a marathon in Antarctica. We talk about that too. 🐧

Summer is my least favorite season (❄️winter girl obvs❄️) but that’s like saying vanilla is my least favorite ice cream. It’s still ice cream!🍦

As the Colorado girls head back to school next week, we are reflecting on a magical summer filled with camps, lakes, puppies, cousins, and bedtimes that were way too late. It will be terribly hot for at least another month, so the summer season adventures continue. ☀️🍉👙😎 by @erin_sprague

A few months ago I got to stand on a stage at the @outsidemagazine festival and introduce @billmckibbenvt and @jessiediggins, two of my heroes.

A few hundred feet away there were bands, food trucks, and a climbing wall with a line of happy kids. It's the @coachella of the outdoors, and I brought my whole family along for the fun. This event could fill a weekend without ever saying the words climate, conservation, or sustainability. Outside made the opposite choice and put it at the center, because their audience depends on it.

That choice is getting rarer. Climate coverage is down ~40%+ since 2021, and many news outlets are cutting their climate desks entirely.

Meanwhile Colorado's snowpack hit 29% of normal this winter, peaked a month early, and melted before it could fill our rivers and reservoirs. Now the smoke, destruction, and air pollution are hurting our health and communities. There are no climate havens.

So @protectourwinters will continue to show up. We're talking about it, and we're advocating in city councils and utility commission hearings, prepared and ready to fight for clean air. The goal is 1 GW of cheaper, better power onto the grid in Colorado, Montana, and Nevada in the next two years.

Thank you @outsidemagazine for leading with the most important conversations. And Bill and Jessie- the best cross-country skier in US history and the guy who taught a generation how to take climate action- thank you for leading by example. 🐐❄️ by @erin_sprague

Stine family jawn: an annual tradition of cousin togetherness, joy, and the best possible chaos 🌵🦂💕 by @erin_sprague

For 250 years, this country has run the greatest experiment in history. It started with underdogs who achieved an unlikely win against a global superpower. It has been imperfect along the way, and always centered on values, progress, and hope.

I find myself in awe that we get to be here, on this planet, at this moment, living and working for a better future. So this week, I am thinking about our country’s big birthday, and how a functioning democracy and a livable climate must move forward together.

I feel grateful to be working on this with a passionate, ambitious, and loved team at @protectourwinters. We recently held a summit in @glaciernps in Montana to protect clean air and clean water, and remember what we are fighting for by spending time in the rivers, mountains, and trees.

As our POW founding father @jeremyjones often says, we are on the right side of history in this work, and we will keep climbing until it is done.

Happy birthday America! 🇺🇸

Here's a critical point from What's The Rusch guest Erin Sprague, CEO of @protectourwinters. Climate action is simple. And small actions from many people creates big impact.

Erin has spent her life moving through wild places and has turned that outdoor connection into real advocacy. We talked about how it’s not always the epic adventures that matter most, but the small, daily choices to get outside, notice what’s at stake, and show up for our environment.

POW is leading the charge to protect public lands, fight for clean air and water, and push for real climate policy change. Their resources make it easy for anyone to get involved, whether you’re new to advocacy or ready to take the next step. From toolkits to active campaigns, POW gives us the structure and support to turn our collective passion into impact.

If you care about the places you ride, run, or just breathe, join the movement now. Head to @protectourwinters or protectourwinters.org to find resources, take action, and join Team POW.

They say it takes a village, but what’s a village without the folks who live there? Being a villager means showing up for your neighbors, contributing where you can, and protecting your home (in this case, the village). Erin Sprague, CEO of Protect Our Winters (POW) thinks this way when it comes to POW’s main goal - combating climate change.

As temperatures rise (and they are, without a doubt), our winters are taking a hit; something that may affect your next hike, including water availability, wildfires, or even increased avalanche risk. In today’s chat, Erin shares an empowering message on renewable energy by explaining what we can do (as a village) to fight the real culprit behind climate change. Is it AI? Extracting materials for renewable energy? Burning fossil fuels? Tune in to find out more, and to learn how being a good “villager” starts with simply knowing your neighbor’s name.
