Why do African families stay silent about mental health — even when someone is desperately struggling?
Ernest unpacks the deep roots of that silence — community, religion, colonial history —
and names the real cost: inside families, in the diaspora, and in lives.
He offers practical steps for changing the conversation, starting today.

Financial stress is one of the leading causes of mental health strain. Chronic money worries activate the body’s stress response, contributing to anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and even relationship conflict. When the financial pressure eases, so does much of that underlying tension.
Solving financial problems helps mental health in several ways:
• Reduced cortisol/stress — The constant mental load of unpaid bills, debt, or uncertainty is lifted, giving the nervous system a chance to regulate.
• Restored sense of control — Financial problems often create feelings of helplessness. Solving them rebuilds agency and self-efficacy, both of which are protective for mental health.
• Better sleep — Money worry is a major driver of nighttime rumination. Financial relief often leads directly to improved sleep quality.
• Improved relationships — Financial stress is a top cause of conflict in partnerships and families. Resolving it reduces friction in close relationships.
• Freedom to focus — Scarcity thinking (when the mind is consumed by “not enough”) narrows cognitive bandwidth. Financial stability frees up mental space for creativity, connection, and joy. by @ernestolook
