Essential Design Books: History of Modern Design by David Raizman
This book provides an in-depth look at design icons, the eras that shaped them, and the social and political context behind their creation. It surveys applied arts and industrial design from the 18th century to the present, tracing the relationship between design and manufacturing, and the technological, social, and commercial forces behind it — balancing rich theory with a strong visual record, so ideas are always grounded in the objects that carried them.

This has been one of the most well-thumbed books in my collection — I’ve used it as reference material to understand design history since 2004, when the first edition released.

Later editions are available too. The newest adds sections on global design traditions and closer attention to user, artificial intelligence and climate change— but honestly, any edition holds its own.

This book helps you understand not just what exists, but why it exists — and why that existence matters.

Essential Design Books: Design as Art by Bruno Munari

A must-read for anyone even remotely connected to design. Munari shares his own thinking and process — the methods he brought to creating objects and “non-objects” alike, and the power of observation as a tool for design research and discovery.

He also takes on a bigger question: who is a designer really!

One line that stayed with me:
“When a lot of money comes along before culture arrives, we get the phenomenon of the gold telephone.” #brunomunari #designasart #designbooks #designeducation #designfaculty by @essential_design_books

A book on one of the most influential design schools — bringing curriculum, academic structure, and ideas on creativity to the fore. Written by Droste, who has worked at the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin since 1980.

More than 550 images from the school’s years at Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin — architectural plans, photographs, sketches, and models — drawn from the Bauhaus-Archiv’s original documents.

A must-read for any designer looking to make sense of today’s material culture through the lens of design. #bauhaus #designhistory #designbooks #taschenbooks #designeducation by @essential_design_books

Design and Form by Johannes Itten

Johannes Itten’s Design and Form is structured into several key chapters, including Chiaroscuro, Theory of Colors, Materials and Texture Studies, Theory and Practice of Forms, Rhythm, Expressive Forms, and Subjective Forms.

The book emphasizes the importance of strengthening students’ creative expression through diverse assignments and the use of multiple mediums. It offers a valuable resource for understanding contrasts, colors, and forms. Itten asserts that imagination and creative ability should be developed first, followed by attention to technical and practical demands, and finally, commercial considerations. For him, creativity must be nurtured at the individual level before moving toward broader applications.

A significant strength of the book lies in Itten’s description of the assignments given to students along with their intended learning outcomes. These exercises are designed to nurture creativity, sharpen perception, and build an understanding of form, color, and texture. The book also presents examples of students’ work under various sections, offering valuable insight into how theoretical principles can be translated into practice.

As such, this book serves as an important reference for design educators. It can be effectively used to formulate assignments that encourage and enhance individual creativity among students. #designbooks #designbookshelf #johannesitten #bauhaus #bauhausdesign #niftbangalore #niftbangalorelife #accessorydesign #addepartment #addepartmentbangalore #F&LAdepartment #designfaculty #designfacultylife #designreferencebooks #designreferencebook #designandform by @essential_design_books
