Aspen looked bored, maybe a bit overwhelmed by all of the strangers and people she vaguely knows, when she was at Emily and I’s house for our wedding weekend. I handed her 5 or so photo books to peruse, and just asked that’s she not to show the purple @harleyweir one to the younger kids. When asked what her favorite image was, Aspen pointed to a straight-forward @roeethridge portrait of @chlomagno from @sixteen.world issue 5. Chloe is standing in front of a green background, wearing a graphic tee, a haircut that lives between photoshoots. She has a Canon 7D strapped around her neck, hands in jean pockets. One wrist has two bracelets that look like reminders of a good day with friends, her eyes have a bit of shadow that don’t draw attention but do add a great sound in the music of the overall look. In the photo, Chloe looks like an average college student walking around the visual arts building. Aspen said she liked that the person looked cool in a way that was casual. Among 5 books full of photos, the image that Aspen chooses as her favorite is a portrait of someone Aspen doesn’t know, photographed by someone she doesn’t know, who looks like a person you could easily see walking around, who is wearing a look that has unpretentious personality and memories casually interwoven - just standing, existing. — Aspen is among the most humble people I know. Throughout her entire life, she’s been quick to take weight off of other’s shoulders. Every time the family gets together, I get to see another version of how she, who is incredibly selfless, is also navigating teenage self-actualization. She is trying a new look, listening to new music, trying a new activity, talking about future jobs, thinking about new art forms. It all comes out sharp and curated and easily. I think Aspen will be a great person to learn from, be led by. — She was adopted when I was 24 – first living in New Mexico while I was in Oklahoma, and now Pennsylvania while I’m in Virginia. And so I’ve been a witness of her life like an acquaintance while having the privilege of calling her a sister. From earlier this year, and then a couple of years before. by @ethanhickerson

Atlee’s old office — I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Atlee hated this tribute to his birthday, or that it made him squirm a bit. None of the items in his old office singularly, easily, define him entirely, and none of their placements alone share a significant amount of insight into who he is. We talked about minimalism a couple of years ago, and he had very little patience for the idea of romanticizing the behavior of ridding one’s self of objects. — Atlee and Kim have moved to Austin recently, and so this room that was officed for a decade+ is no longer. — There is still a foundational mindset that one should have interesting things around them. That the world, as it is now and has been before and at face-value, contains endless fascinations that are more available than ever to investigate, experience, and learn from. That people have been making, and making, and making, and making – seemingly because we need to communicate and share and connect on at least some of these infinite thoughts and experiences that keep coming to us simply by being alive. — Anyways, Happy Birthday Atlee. by @ethanhickerson
