The Euchee Butterfly Farm assists tribal citizens with conservation and habitat restoration for butterflies and other threatened pollinators.

POSTS STORIES REELS

I’ve visited a lot of interesting gardens and talked with a lot of fascinating people over the years, but this week’s conversation introduced me to something completely new to me: butterfly farming. 🦋

Jane Breckinridge has been raising butterflies for more than 30 years at @eucheebutterflyfarm in Oklahoma. But what she and her team have built goes far beyond the butterflies themselves.

Through Natives Raising Natives and the @tribalallianceforpollinators butterfly farming has become a way to support Indigenous communities while restoring native grasslands, preserving native plant species and educating the next generation.

And there are plenty of lessons here for our own gardens, too.

One that really stuck with me: fewer than 5% of butterfly eggs typically make it to adulthood. Caterpillars are an essential part of the food web, and the ones that survive need a LOT of food.

So if we want more butterflies, nectar flowers are only half the story. We need host plants and we need them in abundance. We need gardens where caterpillars are welcome.

This is such a good conversation about butterflies, native plants, habitat and how even a small patch of ground can make a difference. My Marketing Director, nature photographer, and caterpillar enthusiast, Amy Prentice @toadandsage, joined us for this conversation, too. She lives not far from the farm and was inspired to make this story a podcast episode after she recently toured the farm.

It was an exciting week here -- we harvested the zOtO (corn) from our Three Sisters garden! It's the first corn to be grown at the farm in almost 80 years and was raised using traditional Native agricultural methods. This variety of corn, Hickory Cane, was originally developed and cultivated by tribes in the southeastern United States over 200 years ago. s@nlA k'ayasOTa (thank you) to our hardworking staff and volunteers for making this beautiful experience possible! by @eucheebutterflyfarm

Yesterday we hosted a Tribal Alliance for Pollinators workshop on rangeland management, with 57 attendees and 19 tribes represented. The highlight of the day was learning how to use controlled burns to manage invasive species that are destroying native grasslands on the Muscogee Nation Reservation and throughout Oklahoma. Attendees got to learn about the science behind prescribed fire, then assist with an actual burn to see firsthand how to do it safely. Mvto (thank you) to Cole Fagen of Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture for being a fantastic burn boss and teacher! by @eucheebutterflyfarm

Mvto (thank you) to Hozier for giving a shoutout to the Euchee Butterfly Farm from the stage during his concert at the BOK Center in Tulsa on August 10th! It was an honor to be able to share our butterflies and luna moths with him before the concert. We were thrilled (and a bit stunned) when during a break between songs he started talking to the audience about how much he enjoyed the experience! So grateful for his kindness and his support. by @eucheebutterflyfarm

Our butterflies had a great time hanging out with Hozier before his show at the BOK Center in Tulsa on Saturday! As a beekeeper himself, he was very supportive of our work restoring habitat and saving monarchs. Mvto (thank you) to the BOK Center for inviting us to set up a butterfly room backstage for the band and tour staff to relax in before the show. Everyone was so nice (especially Hozier) and we had a blast! EBF staffer Melissa Welch’s heroic efforts starting the set up at 6:00 am on Saturday morning and making sure that the room looked gorgeous despite the tight schedule were also extremely appreciated. by @eucheebutterflyfarm
