France, Spain, Italy and Portugal are pushing to preserve key elements of the EU’s existing live animal transport rules, rather than supporting stronger animal welfare protections. This means:

🔴 Allowing animals to spend up to 63 hours in transport vehicles over multiple journey cycles, with the overall journey lasting even longer.
🔴 Transporting animals during extreme temperatures, for example during heat waves
🔴 Allowing vulnerable animals, such as injured or pregnant, to be transported for long journeys

It’s simply appalling that Ministers are discussing keeping so much unnecessary suffering the norm against citizens' will and scientific evidence.

We are calling on citizens, especially in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, to call these Ministers out, urging them to stop standing in the way of better animal welfare.

Here's who they are: @francescolollobrigida (Italy), @luis_planas_puchades (Spain), @AnnieGenevard (France), @jmfernandes.eu (Portugal)

A sudden bang. A terrified animal. A hiding place that never feels safe. 💔

This Halloween, spare a thought for the animals shaking under the stairs, hiding behind furniture or desperately trying to escape the noise.

Fireworks can turn a night of celebrations into a nightmare for dogs, cats, rabbits and wildlife. The fear can be overwhelming. The consequences can be fatal.

And animals have no way of knowing when the next explosion will come... or when it will all stop.

Our celebrations should never cost an animal their life.

The EU must restrict private fireworks and better protect animals from this avoidable suffering.

🎃 This Halloween, give animals one less reason to be afraid. Celebrate without fireworks and share this post to help others understand what’s at stake.

A terrifying new update on the Transport Regulation has just come to our attention.

European citizens, especially in FRANCE, SPAIN, ITALY, and PORTUGAL...We need you!

Ministers are working fast to try and wrap up talks on the EU's live transport rules as soon as possible.

Your Ministers representing France, Spain, Italy and Portugal are coming together to make sure almost no progress is made at all for animal welfare in this sector.

This small but influential group of countries wants to keep as much of the EU’s existing transport rules intact: rules that are over 20 years old, and that countless harrowing investigations have proven time and time again do very little to help transported animals.

If this happens, animals are destined to suffer for years - even decades - more to come.

We have to step in. We have to show them that we won't stand for this - and we have to be loud.

Tag the following Ministers in the comments below or reach out to them on their pages, showing them that European citizens will not stand for this unacceptable lack of care: @francescolollobrigida (Italy), @luis_planas_puchades (Spain), @AnnieGenevard (France), @jmfernandes.eu (Portugal)

🎬🐙 A nightmare we can still prevent.

Octopuses are intelligent, curious and naturally solitary animals. Yet plans to farm them intensively threaten to confine these remarkable creatures to a life in tanks, where they could face stress, aggression, injuries and even cannibalism.

And the horror doesn't end there. 💀

There is currently no scientifically validated humane method for slaughtering octopuses.

The good news? We still have time to change the ending.

Earlier this year, plans for the world's first commercial octopus farm in Spain were abandoned following years of opposition from scientists, animal protection organisations and concerned citizens.

But without legislation to prevent octopus farming, this cruel new industry could still take hold.

✋ We're calling on the European Commission to ban octopus farming across the EU before this nightmare becomes reality.

Some horrors should stay fictional. Octopus farming is one of them.

😱 We are liking animals to death!

Exotic animals can look irresistible on social media, but their needs are often far more complex than we realise. What looks like an adorable pet video might hide a life spent in an unsuitable environment, far removed from the conditions these animals need to thrive.

So, before falling for those big eyes and tiny paws, we need to look beyond the cuteness. Wild animals aren’t accessories, and not every species belongs in a living room.

The EU must introduce an EU-wide Positive List to ensure that only species scientifically assessed as suitable to be kept as pets can be traded and kept.

Because cute shouldn’t mean captive. 🖤 by @eurogroupforanimals

These numbers should haunt us.

Behind every figure in this carousel are individual animals. Each with a life that mattered. Each capable of suffering. Each deserving of protection.

While the scale is hard to comprehend, the cruelty should be impossible to ignore.

Yet behind slaughterhouse walls, inside crowded farms and beneath the surface of our waters, the horror continues long after the Halloween decorations come down.

And animals cannot wake up from this nightmare.

We need to change how animals are treated, how food is produced and what our laws allow. EU leaders must deliver stronger animal welfare legislation that leaves no animal behind.

Swipe through. Let the numbers sink in. Then help us turn horror into action. ✊

Share this post to bring their suffering out of the shadows, and follow @eurogroupforanimals to find out how you can help build a better future for animals.

We’re told monsters aren’t real. This one is.

The EU banned animal testing for cosmetics in 2013. But a loophole in EU chemicals law lets it creep back in.

A 2021 study found that roughly 1 in 7 ingredients registered for use only in cosmetics had new animal tests after the ban. Animals like rats and rabbits paid the price for products meant to be cruelty-free.

In 2022, over 1.2 million Europeans asked the EU to close this loophole. It’s been 4 years and we’re still waiting. Meanwhile, animals are left to suffer.

🎃 The scariest thing in your shopping cart might be something you can't see.

Behind some of the beef imported into the EU lies a frightening reality: industrial feedlots, where cows are confined in crowded, barren pens, facing heat and cold stress, disease, painful injuries, lack of access to clean water, and other serious welfare problems.

And the horror story doesn't end there. 👻

EU trade policy risks making things worse. Trade agreements like the EU-Mercosur deal open up more opportunities for beef imports without requiring equivalent animal welfare standards, encouraging the expansion of intensive feedlot farming in South America.

As the EU prepares to revise its animal welfare legislation, it has an opportunity to change this.

✋ We must #StopCruelImports by ensuring that new EU animal welfare standards apply to imported products too.

Because animal welfare protections shouldn't stop at the EU's borders.

300 tortoises. 77 parrots. All packed into one car. 💔

Without enough space or proper temperature control, these animals were about to be taken from Sicily to Malta by ferry when Italian authorities stopped their journey.

Among them were macaws and cockatoos belonging to internationally protected species.

All 377 animals were seized and taken to a facility for care. Our member organisations @lav_italia in Italy and @MSPCA_malta in Malta are involved in efforts to address the case.

For each of these animals, protection means having somewhere safe to go, specialist care and a future that meets their needs. Across Europe, there aren’t enough suitable rescue spaces to make this possible for every animal who needs help.

We need better support for rescue facilities and clear rules across the EU on which animals can be traded and kept. Different rules between countries create opportunities for traffickers, and leave animals paying the price.

We also need to tackle the demand for exotic animals that keeps this trade going. Share their story to help raise awareness.

“How is this legal?” 📣🔥

Last week, hundreds of us gathered in front of the European Commission to ask this simple question.

Our panels confronted policymakers with the cruel reality of current EU farming practices: mutilations, high stocking densities, selective breeding, cages, force-feeding and more.

Millions of Europeans have spoken up, time and again, demanding better protection for the billions of animals exploited for food.

It is time for EU leaders to listen and act.

No more delays.
No more loopholes.
We want ambitious animal welfare legislation that leaves no animal behind.

Today, during the Animal Welfare Intergroup meeting at the European Parliament, Professor @aalemanno provided a detailed timeline of #FurFreeEurope.

From the mobilisation of over 1.5 million of citizens to the inaction of the European Commission.
