It was an immense honor to record at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder’s studio last week with @bobspellman and his quartet. As I go back and revisit some of the seminal jazz records that were made in the 50s, 60s and 70s, I have an entirely new perspective and appreciation for the incredible work that was done in that room, and thanks to Don and Maureen Sickler, that work continues to this day. I’ve owned my Zelkova 14x6.5 snare drum for some years now, and it continues to impress me with its versatility. Throughout my career as a jazz drummer primarily, I have often struggled to find snare drums that allow for true dynamic nuance that can both project and cut through, while also allowing for softer strokes and subdivisions to be heard just as clearly. As a player who freelances and performs in rooms of varying sizes and acoustics, I find that the Zelkova consistently allows me to have full control of my touch and my sound at any volume without compromise. The sound of the Zelkova is a beautiful, natural wood sound that is powerful, warm, and it records incredibly well, and like much of what Canopus produces, it seems to sound better and better over time. I look forward to using this drum for years to come both in live settings and in studio. The Zelkova is a true gem, and it is a fantastic addition to just about any setup.
