My beautiful girl is 21. What a whirlwind it has been and what an amazing young woman she has become. Smart, funny, thoughtful, super creative, and so much more. These 21 years have gone so fast but maybe the next 21 could slow down just a little bit. Maybe 🫠

There’s something special about doing things the old way. The way our ancestors did things. The way that makes you feel a connection to something bigger. Creating with my hands gets me there. 😌

I had been wanting to try weaving on a professional loom since my first visit to Oaxaca a few years ago and found this village this time where they specialize in exactly this. I found @casaangeles.experiences and got to spend a day there learning all about the their rug making process, from cleaning the wool, carding, spinning, using local natural dyes, the design process, and finally my favorite part, weaving on the loom. If you ever visit Oaxaca and have a desire to learn a little bit about this special craft, I highly recommend this place for a really thoughtfully presented experience.

After taking pottery classes a few years ago, I had to get my own wheel and now I really want one of these big looms! 🫠

My dad turned 80 this year and we surprised him with a little celebration. 🥳 You see the tears? I think he liked it. And somehow despite all the bad efforts at keeping the secret, it stayed a secret even after half of the guests had already arrived. He thought it was another one of my events 😂 and even helped with the set up of his own surprise party cuz after all it was just another one of my events 🫠🤓 I am truly blessed to have such a great dad 🥰

This weekend we hosted a community skill sharing workshop in collaboration with @communitycirclela

Participants learned how to make their own raised garden bed boxes, and now they can grow their own food in their own backyards. This wonderful learning opportunity was provided by Phil Rios.

Next, Phil guided the group in learning the fundamentals of archery. He shared valuable information on safe handling of the archer’s tools while ensuring everyone had fun shooting at their target. Many had never tried shooting arrows with a bow before.

The last portion of the skill share day, was wheel thrown pottery. Evette led participants on a journey into making clay creations using a pottery wheel.

There were many firsts for folks today and we love being able to share in those moments with the community here at the ranch. Follow @shutterridgeranch and join the fun at our next community event!

Mexico trip with the kids - part 1 🇲🇽

I’ll start by saying it was too short a trip. When I was a kid, my parents took my brothers and I each time for at least a month during our summer vacations in my dad’s greyhound bus that he converted into an RV. We got to see and experience a lot of Mexico since we’d make many stops in various towns and got to know and spend time with a lot of family over there. I have probably seen more of Mexico even now than the US.

So this was just a small taste for my own kids. Jeremy had actually been twice by the time he was 4, but not again until now at 24. Jason has been twice before this time, but to his dad’s region where he met many of his paternal family members. Steph had never been and got her first real experience of Mexico and the region where we are from - Guadalajara.

We spent the first few days in Guadalajara and met up with my cousin and her daughter and the next day, with my Tia. We had lunch at el Mercado San Juan de Dios, visited an amazing archeological site at Guachimontones, and explored downtown. There was so much to see and do but we only had time for a handful of things. I’m just glad my kids got to experience a little bit of it.

This is my 3rd year in a row going back to Mexico after having not returned for like 20 years, and each time it’s an emotional journey with lots of fond memories of simpler times and absolutely unforgettable experiences. I’m very lucky my parents had the desire then to do this for our family and to teach my siblings and I about our roots. 🇲🇽 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽

Part 2 is of our time in my dad’s actual home town. Stay tuned 😆 by @evettesense

We don’t want kings and we won’t stand for any. We won’t stand for corporate overloads who poison our food, our water, our soil, our earth! We have been conditioned to accept these things as normal but this isn’t normal and it isn’t right. No one should be sitting down right now. We have to rise up and speak out and demand our freedoms. We deserve toxin free food! We deserve affordable healthcare! We deserve the freedom to express ourselves and to love whoever we want! We deserve to be free!
We don’t want corporate overlords controlling everything. We don’t want billionaires destroying everything so they may live like kings! We will take back our country together! Every little action counts. Today and everyday, we say No kings! And! No one is illegal on stolen land! 🇲🇽 🇺🇸

This weekend we hosted our first official workshop at the Shutter Ridge Ranch.

Participants learned the fundamentals of working with clay and its different uses. They learned how to identify clay soil, ways to test for clay content, how to mold clay into artistic or functional creations and each hand built their own pieces to keep.

Participants also learned about building structures with clay-based mixtures – cob, adobe, light straw-clay and earthen plaster. They got their hands muddy in the morning and after lunch dove feet first into the earth they were walking on to mix material used to make adobe bricks.

Finally, participants were able to practice applying earthen plaster on the exterior walls of a structure we are fortunate to have available for teaching this nature-based building art. It was a full day of learning, by doing and creating, in a community setting.

The skills taught on this magical day go back thousands of years and were methods used all over the world - many places still use them. We are grateful for the ability to share this knowledge with the community and keep the ancient art of creating sustainably and building affordably alive.

Thanks to Evelyn, Chris, and Christina for leading the workshop and for sharing your valuable knowledge and insights in fun and engaging ways.

This is just the first of many unique learning opportunities that will be available at the ranch.

My beautiful creation turned 6 today. He’s such a happy and caring little guy and he’s growing up way too fast. He asked for a plain yellow cake with no frosting (he doesn’t like sweets) 🤭 and he asked for an ATV for Christmas to use at the ranch. We decided he could have it for his birthday instead. He’ll be hauling stuff around there in no time 🤣🚜

Natural clay plaster on ceilings and walls! We'll host a small workshop on Sunday on this project so if you'd like to learn how to make plaster and apply it over regular walls send us a message! by @evettesense

Don’t ask me how many times I’ve failed, because I’ve lost count. 😵‍💫 But also, don’t forget to ask about how much I’ve learned. Ijs

Some of these are looking so good 😊
