Tamás Hegyi (@_tamashegyi_): ALT+TAB

“ALT+TAB“ inhabits a repurposed arcade machine, where steering wheels and pedals drive players through the maze of an office simulator workstation and a dark-fantasy playstation. As a race unfolds between these spaces, they entangle, intersect, and bleed into each other, converging into twin interfaces of the same productivity engine.

Sebastian Alexander Konzett (@saveokto): Holobiomics

We have never just been individuals. The bodies of most organisms are nothing more and nothing less than multispecies landscapes. No organism becomes itself without the assistance of others. They exist only through constant interaction with the organisms living in and upon it: a locus of biotic relations and overlapping borders. These modes of exchange and interconnection are visible on all different layers of scale and time and have always been part of a terraforming process shaped through play.

Eperke Remetei-Filep (@hiperke): playing candytrail - consent, vulnerability and interpersonal relations

“Candytrail“ is a two player cardgame, which explores consent, vulnerability, and interpersonal dynamics through narrative play. Positioned between analogue game design and performative storytelling, players enter an enchanted garden, communicating only by leaving „candies” on the path and telling stories to each other. Laying out see-through cards creates a unique imprint of the players’ shared journey with every game.

PLAYTHINGS OF TOUCH
It-didn’t-rain-that-day_TREE OF THOUGHT is a live-generated investigation game examining how role-play with large language models rewrites the past. As time travellers through Die Verschissene Zeit (Marković), visitors collectively prompt around a contested political event, from the Vienna Circle in 1936 to the present, between platform capitalism and techno-fascism. The Tree of Unthought visualizes an LLM’s token possibility space.

„And if the wiring brings previously separate data flows onto a single digitally standardized sequence of numbers, any medium can be transformed into any other. With numbers, nothing is impossible.“ – Friedrich Kittler

This quote illustrates the core idea behind the interactive multimedia installation memoryflash: any arbitrary file on a computer holds countless possibilities of interpretation, of which, however, only one is made visible at a time – determined exclusively by conventions such as file types or encoding standards.

What happens when AI becomes a player in how we remember the past?

In “It didn’t rain that day”, the EGC-ROBOPSY research group @experimental_game_cultures , consisting of Margarete Jahrmann @margarete_jahrmann
, Stefan Glasauer, Thomas Brandstetter, Alex Hackl and Stefan Maier, invites participants into a live, installation-based AI role-playing game that moves between historical fact, collective memory and speculation.

Starting with the Vienna Circle in 1936, the workshop uses collective prompting to travel through contested histories and into the present. Large language models become both tool and opponent: taking up fragments of memory, shifting perspectives and reassembling them into new narratives.

What happens when we prompt AI with different memories of the same event? Which histories does it reproduce, distort or leave out? And what can this tell us about the ways AI systems are already shaping our relationship to the past?

Together, participants create a site-specific role-playing game in which documented history and shared imagination begin to overlap while questioning the role of AI and platform technologies in a present increasingly shaped by political polarisation and technofascism.

Alexandra Gašparovičová: 78 Kilometers

„Z Viedne do Bratislavy ďaleko
Torn between the wish to be the most assimilated Austrianest immigrant to ever set foot in the city of Vienna and a sudden newfound pride in being a Slovak Eastern European, I try to write, joke and drag myself out of the massive sediments of national identity. Thanks to the self-awarded title of the objective outsider, I investigate what it is that makes a person of a place and what it takes for another person – who is technically not from that place, but born really only mere 78 kilometers away – to get as close to being perceived as one-of-us-insiders as he possibly can.“

Angewandte Festival auch in Otto Wagner Postsparkasse zb Experimental Game Culture: "Uniscent" Installation von Vitar Drinkovic sammelt Besucherschweiss für Mitmachparfum #angewandtefestival #experimentalGameCulture #DigitalArts by @experimental_game_cultures

From 1–4 July, the University of Applied Arts Vienna opens its studios, workshops and exhibition spaces for the Angewandte Festival. At Georg-Coch-Platz (former Postal Savings Bank), the Department of Experimental Game Cultures treats play not as pastime but as a method of inquiry – a way of thinking, touching and acting through the world.

26 PLAY THINGS – we act with Twenty-six epistemic objects – Erkenntnis-Gegenstände – made to be picked up, turned and held. The exhibition follows a simple premise: it is through the haptic and the physical that we connect to the world and to one another. Play here becomes a form of social intervention, a way of understanding how shared realities – and democracies – are shaped by personal experience and, at best, collectively formed. Visitors are invited not to look, but to act.

The PSYCHO-LUDIC chamber From drone paintings to PLA-Spectators towards autonomous play objects. Drawing on experimental psychology, neuroscience and artistic practice, this exhibition gathers results from the research projects The Psycho-Ludic Approach (FWF/PEEK) and ROBOPSY (WWTF). Its installations and prototypes examine the logics games encode – conquest, accumulation, winning – and ask what happens when those logics, and the strategies of exploitation behind them, are turned on their head. 📍 Room 152, 1st floor

🎮 Ludic Method Talk: Games and Fanfiction
Guest Lecture with Evgenia Amey

For some players, a games doesn't end when they stop playing: rather, this serves as an opportunity to continue the story in writing. Writing game fanfiction has become a pasttime for enthusiastic players all around the world, transforming consumers into what has been called prosumers - people who are not only recipients, but active creators.

In her talk, Evgenia Amey will explore the world of game fanfiction, its culture and its practices.

Evgenia Amey is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Eastern Finland. She has previously worked in the Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies. Her research combines cultural and media studies, tourism studies, cultural geography, and fan studies. Topics she studies include media tourism, place and literature, digital reading cultures, (in)game books, and game-based fanfiction.

LUDIC TEA mit Georg Hobmeier: The Lands of Milk & Funding (Austrian Edition)

The treasure map nobody gave you.

Georg Hobmeier (Causa Creations) is coming to the Angewandte with 25 years of hard-won experience navigating national grants, crowdfunding, and the labyrinthine world of European funding.

This talk will give you a good overview, words of advice, but also discouragement. Feel free to bring your own experiences, questions and opinions so that we can turn this from a monologue into a heated exchange.

BIO
Georg Hobmeier is a game director, ex performance artist, and occasional tarot publisher based in Vienna. He has made documentary games shown at a multitude of festivals, won a Prix Ars Electronica awards with a class of rather unruly kids, and somehow ended up as one of Austria's more successful Kickstarter creators. He teaches, consults, and is constitutionally incapable of staying in one discipline.

To mark the Austrian Universities Conference campaign day "ALLES UNI", the University of Applied Arts Vienna invited people to an experimental game at the Brunnenmarkt on 21 April: Together with Rector Ulrike Kuch, Margarete Jahrmann presented the multi-perspective game “The Tree Game” – a creative role-playing and strategy game that allows players to take turns assuming the roles of citizens and industrialists, as well as a lake and a forest.

The game combines elements of a board game with artistic and interactive components and encourages subsequent reflection on the roles, strategies and implications of the scenarios played out. Thomas Brandstetter, a lecturer in the Experimental Game Cultures department at the University of Applied Arts and co-developer of the game, acted as game master.

For the first time, uniko – the Austrian Universities Conference – organised a cross-university day of action on 21 April to mark the World Creativity and Innovation Day. Under the slogan "ALLES UNI", Austrian universities are demonstrating how they help shape the future of society across a wide range of disciplines.
