About the Artist FARMHAUS Farmhaus is the one-man studio of Ben McBrien founded in Philadelphia, PA and recently relocated to Asbury Park, NJ to be nearer the Sea. “Conceived circa 2010 as a young father with a need for a flexible schedule after spending my youth learning/working at every phase of construction to fund my surfing addiction. My intention: to find function, purpose, and beauty in the discarded remains of Philadelphia’s outdated housing and to have as small an impact as possible while spending my time and life force on the projects that I find the most fulfilling and fun. I make what I can from what I have. My best works are inspired by the materials they are created from, and my favorite materials are inspired by the cities I live in, the sea all around me, and the forests nearby.” SUMMER SALT fresh perspectives in print, paint, photography, sculpture, and scrimshaw Exhibition on view through September 6, 2025 Zach Gallery / Easton, MD #farmhaus #shosugiban #woodsculptor #zachgalleryeaston by @farmhaus___

Back in my 40’s… 📸 @richmc by @farmhaus___
FIRED UP … thanks to my old homie @dexterexner for compiling my clips by @mrimagesjbay from this bucket list trip to the greatest place on Earth. What a life event to post up at Jeffrey’s Bay for over a month with nothing to do but surf my body to near death everyday and feast on fire roasted succulent meats nightly cooked with love over Namibian hardwoods on the Brai with the LORD of the haus @stephencarpitella and his band of merry men. I’ve never been more in my element. Never felt Mania quite this strong. On the last day of this trip I injured my ribs and honestly I’ve yet to recover… it’s been over 2 years! This is where I hope to retire someday (sooner than later). by @farmhaus___
East swell. 5’ @ 10 seconds … Secret Spot. by @farmhaus___
ALASKA: April 2008. Between the Bears and and the Sea Lion attacks we built a fort, rode some beautiful waves, laughed our asses off and took in some of the most jaw dropping scenery I’ve experienced on Earth. Nowhere has made me feel so small and so low in the food chain as Yakutat, AK.(spot burn) I’m so thankful to have been fortunate enough to make a journey such as ours. ALASKA: exactly 18 years ago to the minute (from the time of this post). The older I get the more thankful I am that I brought this @grainsurfboards Lis-ish Fish (the first of its kind) along for the journey. On the day we “discovered” this spot and commandeered a boat to motor us (@sirjeffreyallenmyers @billshit @joemanfordcarter and @nick_lavecchia) out to the point I over-frothed and dove from the back of the boat, at full speed, but my leash caught a deck cleat on the rear corner of the vessel. Instantly my @wrv1967 short board was ripped from my grip and wedged against the gunwale by the fins like the plank of a pirate ship and I was keel hauling on plane 8’ behind the motor until the captain realized my folly and cut the motor. Board one RUINED. Embarrassed but unwounded I grabbed my back-up and spazzed my way into the line-up. Later the next day after a few hours on the back-up, the tail snapped in the shallows after a Loooooong left. The ONLY other option I had was the wooden fish that I had packed, built the year before in @goodnyou_2 ‘s basement right as Grain was congealing from vision to reality. I was a “short boarder” right up and until this session. Over the next few hours I transitioned into an “alternative” surfer as this mildly heavy wooden fish proceeded to BLOW MY MIND in the pristine lefts peeling flawlessly into Yakutat Bay. At some point in that sesho I nose dived into the cobblestone laden sand and I split the nose. The hollow board filled with water and I was relegated to borrowing Myers’ chipped out shorties for the duration of our mission but my mind was changed. And I ain’t been the same ever since. This 8’6” @skipfryesurfboards Eagle (go birds 🦅) has slidden more great waves than all my other surfboards combined. I’ve never moved faster over the surface of the ocean and it requires the least effort from my body. Here is wave one from session 2 at NJ’s PREMIER POINT BREAK captured by @stayabovetheweather. by @farmhaus___
So excited to have @farmhaus___ custom pieces all over the shop, he was the only option I even considered when I decided to open my own place. We have been friends since 7th grade and I’ve wanted to have some of his pieces for a very long time. I couldn’t be happier with how they all turned out. Thanks Ben! 📸 @ryanjohnson_1 by @farmhaus___
Got the cover of SUFFER magazine on my very first wave of the day. “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”… whoever said that can suck my frozen shrimp! 🍤 by @farmhaus___
Some days you are the Hammer … some days you are the Nail. Yesterday I was the later. @stayabovetheweather 🎥 by @farmhaus___
