FRLT works with willing landowners to voluntarily conserve and protect land across the Feather River Watershed, including Sierra Valley ranches. Learn more about the science behind the range with Rangeland Science 101 with Caroline Wade TONIGHT 10/29 from 5:30-7pm at the Sierra Valley Preserve Nature Center. Come with your questions about rangeland management, ecology, and livestock grazing. Image by FRLT/Kristi Jamason. by @featherriverlandtrust
Olsen Barn Meadow in Chester is one of FRLT's five public preserves across the watershed, most recognized for its iconic 19th century barn. This summer, contractors and FRLT's team completed an ADA-compliant parking pad and short path to a picnic area and scenic overlook with a new bench, creating a space to rest and enjoy the views of the 107-acre meadow and barn in Chester. Structural work to stabilize the barn was also completed, along with replacing siding on the south and lakeside faces—even reconstructing the barn's historic sliding doors. This work will protect the structure from the elements and ensure this landmark will remain safe and standing for community enjoyment for years to come. A big thank you to local timber company Collins Pine for generously donating the lumber needed for the project! Check back in late spring to view the new educational interpretive signs! Join us in honoring and celebrating Indigenous people and culture this Indigenous Peoples' Day. Since the beginning of memory, Indigenous people have inhabited the Feather River region. The Upper Feather River Watershed is the ancestral and unceded homelands of the Mountain Maidu and Washoe people and is also culturally significant to other California tribes, including the Northern Paiute Tribe and the Nisenan Tribe. FRLT has been fortunate to work closely with Indigenous partners for decades—from collaborating with Washoe and Maidu people at the Sierra Valley Preserve Nature Center to partnering on land back efforts with both Maidu Summit Consortium and the newly founded Waší·šiw Land Trust. We are grateful for the trust, community, and shared knowledge of both Mountain Maidu and Washoe partners and are proud to work collaboratively to help secure the return and conservation of their homelands in the Feather River Watershed. We will continue to protect and support human connection to land—it as important as protecting the ecosystems we all depend on. Curious about montane meadow ecosystems, prescribed fire, and reestablishing native wildflowers? Join Georgia Vasey and the Tahoe and Sierra Valley chapter of the CA Native Plant Society this Friday, 10/9 for a free talk from 6pm to 7:30pm at the Sierra Valley Preserve Nature Center. Georgia Vasey is a fifth-year Environmental Studies PhD student in the Holl Restoration Ecology Lab at UC Santa Cruz. Whether you attended an event, volunteered your time and expertise, or contributed to our summer fundraising campaign (or all of the above!), thank you for making summer 2026 a success! We are excited to share that we met the matching challenge set forth by a generous team of FRLT supporters. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to FRLT. You can make a difference today for water and wildlife—like this Great Blue Heron—that rely on conserved lands across the Feather River Watershed for food and habitat. We have 36 hours remaining to meet the matching challenge—it's not too late to give to our summer campaign and have your gift doubled! Together, we can ensure that places like the Feather River Watershed remain vibrant, resilient, and protected forever. Make your gift today at frlt.org/donate If you've already contributed to our summer campaign, thank you! We can't do this work without you. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Join Environment California Research & Policy Center and partner groups in counting wildlife along roads between Oct. 2 and 11 as part of the 2026 Roadside Wildlife Count. Volunteers will use the ROaDs app created by @centerforlargelandscapes to track the impacts of roads on wildlife this fall. Data from this project will be shared with researchers and state officials to support efforts to mitigate the impact of our roads on wildlife and us. Sign up to be a volunteer now at the 'Read more and take action' link in our bio or at https://environmentamerica.org/california/center/events/2026-roadside-wildlife-count/”. Swipe to learn how to set yourself up to collect data starting on October 2nd! Thank you to the organizations making this event as big as possible: Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy is at the forefront of urban conservation in Los Angeles through land acquisition, stewardship, science and research, community education, and advocacy work.
