FIC-Fighters was represented at the “Reconnecting with the EU: Matchmaking and Network Partner Meeting”, organised by the University of Miskolc in Hungary on 28-29 September 2026, through the participation of project partner Pavlos Tyrologou, Projects Advisor of @efgeologists. The two-day meeting brought together researchers, innovation specialists, project development experts and institutional representatives to reconnect European partnerships, exchange on ongoing research and identify new opportunities for collaboration. During the event, Pavlos highlighted the role that FIC-Fighters can play in advancing European research and innovation around phosphogypsum and industrial residues. The project provides a practical example of how research and innovation can contribute to circular economy approaches by exploring pathways to transform challenging industrial residues into potential resources. FIC-Fighters also reflects the importance of bringing together multidisciplinary expertise, research organisations, industry and wider professional networks to move innovative solutions from research towards practical application and impact. As we move further into the second half of the project, FIC-Fighters continues to make steady progress towards the demonstration of our phosphogypsum valorisation solutions. Over the past months, work has continued across several fronts. On the technical side, partners are advancing the optimisation and validation of the different process routes, while the engineering of the NaOH pilot plant is progressing towards the final equipment selection and specifications, with the necessary permitting processes already underway. These steps are bringing us closer to the construction and operation of the pilot plant At the same time, the project is moving forward on the environmental and social dimensions. Work on the criteria for the environmental regeneration of the different case-study sites is progressing, while preparations continue for the remaining Citizen Workshops in Turnu Măgurele, Romania, and Cartagena, Spain. We have also recently resumed our FIC-Fighters Connect sessions after the summer break, with a dedicated session on the Barreiro pilot site in Portugal. The Municipality of Barreiro shared the site's industrial background and the challenges and opportunities linked to its future regeneration. This provided a great example of how the project combines technical solutions with the specific context and needs of each case-study region. Meanwhile, we are also approaching the final version of the PEPE Portal (Phosphogypsum Exploitation Portal for Europe), which will support the identification of potential replication opportunities beyond the project's case-study sites. Step by step, research, engineering, environmental regeneration and stakeholder engagement are coming together as we move closer to the demonstration phase of FIC-Fighters. Our next FIC-Fighters Connect session will take place on 15 October. Stay tuned for more details! #Phosphogypsum #CircularEconomy #EnvironmentalRegeneration #ResearchAndInnovation #StakeholderEngagement by @ficfighters
The FIC-Fighters Virtual Forum on Phosphogypsum (PG) is an online hub providing clear, non-technical information on PG. It features real-world case studies and encourages cross-regional dialogue to support stronger circular economy policies. 🔎 Featured article: Closing the Carbon Cycle: From Kinetic Control to Industrial Integration How do you move from controlled CO₂ capture experiments to the complexity of real industrial emissions? At @unisevilla, the FIC-Fighters NaOH Route is being investigated at intermediate pilot scale using high-purity commercial CO₂. This controlled environment allows the team to establish reaction kinetics and optimise the conditions needed to produce calcium carbonate meeting commercial purity standards. In parallel, the Tharsis Mining pilot plant is being developed for the next scale-up stage, with a target capacity of 1 tonne of phosphogypsum per day. It is designed to use high-purity CO₂ during this stage, providing the controlled conditions needed to establish a reliable kinetic baseline. Meanwhile, CIUDEN is characterising gas emissions from eight industrial sectors and testing synthetic gas mixtures containing relevant impurities such as SOx, NOx and suspended particles. This helps identify the operational limits of the process and prepare it for more demanding conditions. The next step (integration with real industrial stack gases) lies beyond the current FIC-Fighters project. The knowledge generated through the project will provide the scientific and operational foundation for that future step. 🧪 Master the chemistry 🔬 Validate process robustness 🏭 Prepare for industrial integration Today’s cylinder is the bridge to tomorrow’s stack. 👉 Read the full article: https://fic-fighters.eu/virtualforum/closing-the-carbon-cycle-from-kinetic-control-to-industrial-integration #Phosphogypsum #CO2Capture #RawMaterials #CCU #CircularEconomy by @ficfighters
The FIC-Fighters Virtual Forum on Phosphogypsum (PG) is an online hub providing clear, non-technical information on PG. It features real-world case studies and encourages cross-regional dialogue to support stronger circular economy policies. Today, we are showcasing one of the contributions from the Forum: ♻️ From Waste Mountains to High-Value Materials: The “NaOH Route” of FIC-Fighters How can phosphogypsum waste become a source of valuable materials while capturing CO₂? The NaOH Route explores how PG can be transformed into marketable products such as calcium carbonate and sodium sulphate, while the strategic Al-waste route also creates opportunities for industrial symbiosis by reusing aluminium industry waste. 🌱 From waste to resources, from pollution to opportunity. 🌍 FIC-Fighters at the 21st SDEWES Conference in Gran Canaria! From 30 August to 3 September 2026, FIC-Fighters took part in the 21st SDEWES Conference (Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems) in Gran Canaria, Spain. An inspiring week of knowledge exchange, collaboration and discussion around the transition toward a more sustainable future. FIC-Fighters had a double presence at SDEWES, with both of our routes presented: ➡️ The NaOH Route for #phosphogypsum valorisation and CO₂ sequestration, exploring how an industrial waste stream can be transformed into a valuable resource while contributing to carbon capture: Presented by Adrián Pavón Duarte from @unisevilla and CapturaCO2. ➡️ The Ammonia Route: Presented by Valentina Antonia Vergara Uribe from Åbo Akademi University. Two routes, one shared ambition: turning industrial waste and carbon emissions into opportunities for a more circular economy. 🌱 SDEWES provided a valuable opportunity to connect with people working across different parts of the sustainability landscape. The discussions and exchange of perspectives highlighted how collaboration between academia, industry and the public sector can help accelerate practical solutions for more efficient use of resources and a lower-carbon future. #SDEWES2026 #CircularEconomy #Recycling #Sustainability #ResourceEfficiency by @ficfighters
