The Bellaphone by Jordan Waraksa transforms reclaimed whiskey barrel staves into sculptural horn speakers that echo vintage gramophones while creating something entirely contemporary. Inspired by Edison’s 1911 Cygnet, the design “lifts upward like a cobra, and poised like a flower,” creating both visual drama and acoustic precision. What began as an entry for a 2014 tequila barrel art competition has evolved into a signature piece that showcases the possibilities of repurposed materials. The barrel’s original char marks create unexpected depth and contrast against the polished surfaces – a visual element that draws the eye while telling the story of the material’s previous life.

What makes these passive speakers so special is how they reflect Waraksa’s unique position at the intersection of craftsmanship, sculpture, and music. After years of pursuing both violin performance and sculpture separately, Fiddlehammer emerged as the perfect synthesis of these disciplines. The Bellaphone has been refined through multiple iterations, from early six-foot Western Red Cedar versions to these more intimate barrel editions. We find ourselves drawn to objects that refuse singular categorization, and the Bellaphone exemplifies this brilliantly – neither purely sound system nor simple sculpture, but something far more intriguing that emerges when an artist brings their full range of skills to the workbench.

And I, can lead up slowly
Alone, to lean on ya Sunday Skin
Silent test from the letter press
It’s a rhythm I cant hold
We buried hours the crumbling bluffs
Though It will not hold for long

We’re alright
Stoways of the sunlight
Here until werong time
fawn under the floodlights
