NEW CONSIGNMENT - Daily Sketch - “How famous Bizarre Ware is made at Stoke” For over 40 years I have been passionate about Clarice, I often wonder how many times I’ve typed or said her name in my never ending love for her work. The pots themselves are simply wonderful but I also love the story, the research and the ephemera, so to have finally found a copy of this incredibly rare newspaper is something of a moment for me. The December 4th, 1931 edition of the Daily Sketch newspaper featured a famous back-cover photo editorial titled “HOW FAMOUS BIZARRE WARE IS MADE AT STOKE”. The feature offered a rare behind-the-scenes look into the innovative production line orchestrated by Clarice Cliff at the Newport Pottery and A.J. Wilkinson factories in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. The feature highlighted how Clarice broke traditional, rigid industry molds to create her vibrant, hyper-modern “Bizarre Ware”. The production process publicised by the newspaper centered around several distinct stages When Colley Shorter, managing director of A.J. Wilkinson and Clarice Cliff’s professional mentor (and future husband) saw the extensive back-cover spread featuring the “Bizarre Girls” and Cliff’s Stoke-on-Trent factory line on December 4, 1931, he recognized its immense marketing potential. To capitalize on the publicity, Shorter ordered thousands of copies of that edition. He had the newspapers shipped directly to the factory, where he systematically distributed them to the firm’s global retail agents and stockists across the UK and North America to serve as a powerful, real-time sales brochure for the booming Bizarre Ware line. The final cherry on the cake is that it’s believed this copy was Clarice’s own, coming from her estate after her death in 1972. What a find! What a piece of history! To my knowledge there are only a couple of other examples known to exist? Does anyone else have a copy? Clarice Cliff - Thursday 15th October 2026 @fieldingsauctioneers by @fieldingsauctioneers

NEW CONSIGNMENT - Appliqué Caravan shape 195 vase. The Appliqué Caravan pattern is widely considered one of the rarest, most visually striking, and sought-after designs in the entire Clarice Cliff catalogue. Introduced around 1930–1931 as part of the brief Appliqué run, it captures a highly romanticised Art Deco landscape scene. The Appliqué range was unique in technique with no traditional outlining but the use of Indian ink to sketch out the design which would burn away in the firing process leaving a tapestry effect. The design was then bordered with thick bands of colour, a style that draws links to the modernist woodblock prints and linocuts of the era. Artists of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art (such as Claude Flight,Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews) were popularising prints that used dynamic, heavy graphic borders and flat planes of colour to capture movement and energy. It can be argued that Cliff effectively translated this printmaking style onto three-dimensional earthenware. This spectacular vase will be offered on Thursday 15th October 2026 @fieldingsauctioneers by @fieldingsauctioneers
NEW CONSIGNMENT - An imposing and immaculate single handled Lotus Jug in Lightning circa 1930. Like much of her abstract geometric work from the circa 1930 “Bizarre” era, the inspiration behind Clarice Cliff’s Lightning pattern stems from a mix of avant-garde European art movements and the fast-paced energy of the Jazz Age. Clarice Cliff was heavily inspired by continental European art movements. The sharp, intersecting, and jagged lines of the Lightning pattern directly mimic the fragmented, geometric spatial planes popularized by Cubist painters like Pablo Picasso, which she adapted to fit three-dimensional ceramic shapes. The late 1920s and early 1930s were defined by speed, electricity, and syncopated jazz rhythms. The “lightning flashes” represent the raw energy, dynamism, and industrial optimism of the modern era. It was designed to visually disrupt the stiff, conservative, and floral Victorian pottery traditions of the past. Add to this that incredible and early banding and this is a definite show stopper. Estimated at £2000 to £3000 this is a key piece for any collection. Clarice Cliff - 15th October 2026 - @fieldingsauctioneers by @fieldingsauctioneers
