I’ve always admired these session as I’m passing by searching for a wave like feature to ride. They always go big. This time I decided to watch a little closer and get to grips with this new camera. Really happy with how these frames turned out. Cheers to the riders for being you. Please tag them in the comments if you know who they are.

“These images were born from being overwhelmed with the pace of the digital world. I wanted to go back to where I started, back to 35mm film. Shooting 35mm film from the water slowed the pace and I learnt how important it is to shoot with intent, to be patient and to really think about what you want to capture. Those years exploring the Atlantic reignited the love I have for photography.”

| @tomloweyo is a type of energy you don’t come across very often. He moves through water with a vision like no other. He sees what’s possible and pushes it every time he paddles out here (or anywhere for that matter). There would be days where I didn’t think anyone would be paddling but upon checking it from the cliff at dawn, you’d spot him already out there sat in the channel, taking it all in. Over the years I’ve seen him pay his dues only to paddle back out and turn and go on the wave of the day. Even after two near fatal wipeouts his drive and his vision remained. His tenacity is unmatched and I believe he’s the definition of @bigwavechallenge SURFER OF THE YEAR award. These frames were captured pre and post one of those memorable rides you’ve all seen.

Congrats bro!

A few years ago I was asked to shoot @endless_fun_surfboards in his shaping bay for his 100th board giveaway. Watching someone in their creative zone is so inspiring. He makes beautiful boards in all shapes and sizes. Check him out if you’re ever on the west coast of Ireland

I remember the first time I watched this wave break and being captivated by its power and behaviour. Ridiculously shallow, with a pin point take off zone. I never thought I’d see it being ridden until @ben_player turned up for @farn0rth. Then @thomashorig gave it a go and ripped chunks out of his wetsuit while I tried not to get beached on the slab. More recently @cocom4debarrelkilla showed what was possible on a surfboard. Much respect to anyone that turns and go’s on one of these .

I found this place a tricky place to swim, so thought I’d make it even more of a challenge and load some @kodak Tri- X 400 into my Nikonos V and hopefully line up a shot or two.

After a slow drive, the “track” ends and you’re left with nothing but a river and surrounding peaks for company. It doesn’t get much better. Where Fishing takes you.

Recent conversations with like minded folk have me thinking about Fisheye’s and the endless enjoyment they provide

A couple of favourites from a few years ago while the ocean was flat. Shot on 35mm film through my trusty old Nikon F4 & 16mm f2.8

Going big off the summit rocks at @trebleconenz

Super stoked with the frame of him in the abyss but I’m always drawn to those frames that tell you where it all came from. The initiation of expression. Thanks Bodie

Power of the Atlantic

One from a few years ago where I was humbled by the power of this place. Having never swum or surfed this spot, it was a crash course in positioning. The light that day was flat and I had an idea of trying to blend the whitewater with the sky. I also chose to load a roll of Portra to hopefully capture the contrast between the sky and the wave, that emerald beauty. I followed @jtudella out and sat way inside of him as I did my best to line up with @noahlane_ @harrybryant @jack__harris__ . I was stoked with the result of a few frames. Here Noah is just cresting this one as it unloads on the reef.

I remember being a teenager and laying eyes on Ansel Adams’s work for the first time. I would flick through the pages of that book endlessly. His work has and always will be a huge inspiration to me and why I love b&w.
