If you have zero fans right now, your next release does not have to go nowhere. Here is the order I would do things in.

Pick your release date at least six weeks out, because if the song is up tomorrow there is no time to promote it. Then build a playlist in your genre and grow it with ads, so you have a place where people already listen and you can put your own song in there. Send the song to curators in your genre before release day, since most of them plan their playlists weeks ahead. And on release day, start running ads to the song. A few dollars a day is enough to put your music in front of people who have never heard of you.

Every step here brings new listeners in, and some of them stay. That is the whole point of doing it in this order.

How does a failing musician end up doing music marketing? 👀

I released song after song for years and almost nobody listened.

So I started chasing shortcuts. I paid for fake streams, I trusted services that promised the world, and I got scammed more times than I want to admit.

Then things changed → I studied marketing for 3 years → I joined a company running ad campaigns for major artists → I finally saw how the music industry works behind the scenes.

And here is what that turned into:

→ 50,000+ songs reviewed as a curator
→ 10,000+ musicians placed on playlists
→ 100,000+ playlist followers
→ 100M+ listeners reached
→ 400+ musicians through my programs

Now I put everything I learn in one place 🎧 A weekly email for 4,500+ musicians, a podcast, courses, services and free tools I wish I had when I was getting 40 views on my TikToks.

I am not a guru. I am still figuring things out, and I share the wins and the mistakes as they happen.

Most of your streams probably come from playlists, so why would you pay for Meta ads?

Because the people who find you through an ad chose to click. They listen to more of your songs, they play them all the way through, and they keep coming back. Someone who hears you on a gym playlist usually never checks who you are.

Playlists give you the volume, and ads bring you the people who stay. If you only rely on playlists, the moment you get removed, your streams go with it.

If you want to run the ads yourself, I made a course called Label Level Ads. I share my screen in ten lessons and show you my whole system, including the content side.

For the past few months I’ve been building FilmMySong, and today it’s open.

You upload your song, tell it what the song is about, and it films a music video, a lyric video or an animated lyric video from that. You see every scene as a picture before anything is filmed, you change the ones you don’t like, and every word shows up the moment it’s sung. You can even be in it, as yourself or as an anime character.

I built it because I spent thousands on a music video that only my friends watched, and then paid someone on Fiverr for stock clips that had nothing to do with my song. I wanted every musician to have a music video they’re proud of, without a crew or a budget.

Most songs that get declined by playlist curators are good songs. The problem usually starts before you even submit 👀

I talked about this with Jason, the founder of SubmitHub, on the More Than Streams podcast. The biggest mistake he sees is musicians going too big on their first campaign. They spend 200 credits, pick the wrong genre, and send to the most impressive curators on the platform.

So start small. Use 20 or 30 credits, pick curators who approve 30 to 40 percent of what they get, and make sure you know the vibe of your song and not only the genre label. If it works, then you spend more.

Also remember that playlists won’t make you fans on their own. They get you streams in the right niche and teach Spotify who you sound like, and the ads bring the fans. You need both.

How would you describe the vibe of your music to a curator in one sentence? by @finchbergling

I put one song into 4 different lyric video looks: Collage, Editorial, Painted and Storybook.

It’s the same song and the same words, with every word timed to the singing. Animated lyric videos preview in full for free, so you can try every look before you pay.

I once hired a producer to finish my song and told him to make it good enough for editorial playlists. That was the whole brief, and today I’m still not a big fan of that song 😅

So I sat down with producer Matt Mayz and asked him what musicians should bring before they hire a producer. We talked about reference tracks, why “make it sound good” doesn’t help anyone, whether to spend your feedback money on SubmitHub or SoundBetter, and if music school is worth it.
