When I was diagnosed 10 years ago, no one told me there was anything I could do other than start on a medication and hope for the best. That only time would tell.

That wasn’t a good enough answer for me, so I started researching. I found functional medicine, read a boat load of books and started experimenting with different anti-inflammatory diets and using various other lifestyle changes as my treatment plan.

10 years later I am living proof that your diet and lifestyle choices matter- A LOT. I am living symptom free and healthier than ever.

The things we do for our kids… 😬 not the fastest time but I was able to run 2 miles without stopping, except at the halfway point between miles. I’m pretty impressed with myself, especially since I know I have not attempted to run since 2019, which was when I tore my right lateral meniscus. Definitely not going to take up running but I’m satisfied knowing I can do it even if I’m a turtle 😂 by @findingthereset

10 years ago I couldn’t get out of bed.

I had such debilitating vertigo that lying as still as possible in bed was the only thing that helped. Even rolling over in bed sent me spiraling in complete misery. I was in my first (known to me) relapse of MS and it was a doozy. The left side of my body was burning and felt like it was on fire. I couldn’t speak a full sentence without my brain glitching and not allowing the words to come out. When they did, they came out in a forced slur. I had tingling in my hands and feet. Loud noises, bright lights, and busy patterns overwhelmed me. I couldn’t walk without holding on to someone because I was so dizzy. I also had to look straight forward because turning my head triggered my vertigo symptoms. I couldn’t carry my daughter or read her a book or sing her a song as simple as twinkle twinkle little star. I couldn’t leave the house except in short spurts or else it would completely exhaust me mentally and I would spend the rest of the day in bed.

I was devastated. Scared. Embarrassed. Angry. Defeated.

My body had completely betrayed me. An MRI of my brain lit up like the 4th of July. This was my first known relapse but there was evidence I likely had MS for years without knowing. The reason it made such an impact at that time was because the active lesions were located in what MS neurologists refer to as “prime real estate”.. my freaking brain stem.

I cried and begged and prayed to get better. I promised God that if I got better that I wouldn’t take an ordinary day for granted again. That I would do everything in my power to get better and stay better.

You see, I couldn’t always do the things you see me doing in this video. I spent 6 months recovering from that relapse. Those first few months were really tough. I missed weddings, bachelorette parties. I missed half of my daughter’s first birthday party because it was too much for me. Slowly but surely with the help of Functional medicine, a lot of reading, a complete overhaul of my diet and my mindset… I got better.

Your thoughts have power. Your brain believes the narrative you tell yourself. Even swapping simple words in a sentence can subtly shift your mindset. Replace” I can’t” with “I can try”. Hey you. I’m Therese, an MS warrior 🧡 sure, we can’t control everything. Especially with MS. But there is SO much we can control. What we eat, how we move our body, the narrative that we tell ourselves day in and out, where we place our faith- whether it’s in God or yourself. There is so much power in all of it. There is so much YOU get to decide.

A positive mindset isn’t pretending that everything is easy and sunshine & rainbows. It’s a daily choice and it’s one that has changed everything for me.

And you know what, they were delicious! Here’s the thing, no one’s forcing me to eat this way. I choose it. With an MS diagnosis, there is so much you can’t control. So I choose to take control of the things I can. Now I don’t think twice about not eating dairy because I’ve been doing this for 10 years, but it was super hard in the beginning! If you’re just starting out on your journey with different lifestyle habits, give yourself some grace. It’s tough but you’ve got this! When that one becomes easy and feels natural, add something else. If you want to build sustainable change in your life, this is a great way to go about it! Your habits are either helping you or hurting you. What’s one thing you’re looking to change to improve yourself?

Drastic change is hard to accept. Not impossible, but hard. You can even pick a few things to focus on if that feels achievable, but not so many that you find yourself angry or resentful towards your new habits. Build the foundation one step at a time.
