Over the last year I've been developing a project that, step by step, is taking shape and form. In the summer, at the foot of a lake in the Laurentides, it found its title. In the autumn, it became a life-size maquette in my studio. In the winter, it was put to word along with an exploration of every technical detail. After the epic snowstorm, several days at the Bronze Foundry in Inverness, and a jury presentation, I received the welcome news that I will continue to realize the project. The work includes the contributions of many - a story to be continued in the days and weeks to come.

➤ Repost @mnbaq :

Project archive (Re-assemble)

À la rencontre des sources (A Tale of Sources) is a series of bronze sculptures cast using the lost-wax method. The sculptures are hand-built and composed of variety of materials including birch bark, drift wood, rings, ladders, vases, pallets and discarded building materials, that are then transformed into bronze.

The sculptures are grouped into four tableaus that explore the themes of entropy, temporality, migration, and knowledge sharing.

The process of creation began with a period of research, followed by many trials and tribulations in the studio, the sculptures were then formalized with a thin coat of wax, and transferred to the prolific team at the Atelier de bronze Inverness, and then installed at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

This portfolio documents the project’s evolution, more specifically the reassemblage of the cast bronze pieces. To cast the sculptures in bronze, they are cut and sectioned into segments small enough to fit in the foundry’s kilns. Once the ceramic shell is removed, they are welded back together like a complex and seamless puzzle.

Accessible day and night, À la rencontre des sources (A Tale of Sources), is now permanently installed on the grounds of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec @mnbaq. My thanks to multiple project partners, and the members of the jury for their trust - the project arises from to an open call by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec @mccquebec

This portfolio documents the project’s evolution in the studio. Highlights include : an emergency superglue surgery of a deep cut on my hand, the waxing expertise of the exceptional Jenn Wade @jennndanger , a view of master ceramist Margaret Griffin throwing her clay (two of her vases are cast in bronze as part of the artwork) @m_l_griffin , and a group portrait the crew managing the industrial heritage building where I have kept my studio for the last 15 years – also showcasing an exceptional collection of pallets, one of which is integrated into the bronze sculptures.
