Sixgun Saturday Another Revolver Fest adoption. A beautiful, extremely well-preserved 1944 Colt Officer’s Model .22LR, Kings front mirror sight, vintage stag and pristine original stocks. The action is insanely smooth. Ordinarily, I might not opt for gold appurtenances, however, an exception was made in this special case. by @firearm_legacies

Today’s old but gold is a Winchester 1873 made in 1891 chambered in 22short. While nearly 750,000 1873s were made, less than 20,000 were ever produced in 22 making it a rare treat for sure. Had to make an extractor for it as replacement parts for the rimfires don’t really exist, with a single set trigger weighing two ounces and holding a measly 25rds for a true load on Sunday shoot all week experience by @firearm_legacies
WHAT IS “PRACTICAL ACCURACY”? The question is quite simple yet complex. In the “modern” world it seems that polymer, dot sighted, striker fired pistols rule the roost. People are extremely quick to judge others when you disagree with their viewpoint, even slightly. It’s kind of funny actually! These polymer packing “whiz kids” will call you a “fudd” if you even dare LIKE the 1911 platform for defensive purposes but it’s all good if you carry a snub nose .38 Special as a concealed carry pistol! There is ONE thing you cannot take away from old “slab sides” and that is the trigger. Take a look at the pistols used in the current sporting arena to include the “Tactical Games”. Yes whiz kids, a 2011 is a modern 1911 and the competitors use them because they are extremely accurate and there is no trigger out there that comes even close. In my world, I use my pistols for training others as well as defensive purposes. So what is “practical accuracy” then? To me it’s the acceptable accuracy YOU can achieve with YOUR handgun of choice. Sounds simple … right? Well what is the “practical” part of the equation then? That is the accuracy you achieve against an opponent that decided today was your day to DIE and he is going to mount your head above his fireplace mantel! Simply put, accuracy under severe DURESS. My training cadre and I see even the accuracy of the very best fall apart when I put extreme stress on them during training. It is truly an eye opener for all who participate. We don’t play silly games where you win a trophy or a medal. Your prize is what can you actually achieve under the pressure of a life and death situation. Choose wisely. From choice of handgun, holster, sturdy belt, ammunition, concealment gear all has to become part of your daily routine. Your training should reflect what you are ACTUALLY preparing for. Program your computer, your BRAIN, to be totally efficient under duress. Above are several photos of 1911 pistols I shot today. The small targets were shot at 7 yards, deliberate aim and trigger work. The bigger targets were engaged from concealment, shooting fast but deliberate. Practical accuracy? by @firearm_legacies
A Tale of the 44 Magnum … I absolutely love tailoring a load to a specific handgun. A while ago, I ordered 500 x 260 grain Keith bullets from our friends at Rim Rock bullets. I worked up a load using a good dose of trusty 2400 propellant and off to the range we waltzed, me and Model 629. She is a 4 incher that has been with me for a while now. Shooting was done from a dead rest, on this occasion, my daypack. First we tried double action. BOOM! Dang, that first shot startled me as the load was HOT! She bucked like she wanted the first place trophy at a rodeo! The 260 grain bullet screamed out of the barrel. Maybe a little too hot of a load, although not Elmer’s HOT! 🥵 The double action shooting went reasonably well with a low flyer. Now it was time for single action mode. As the photo indicates, the trusty 629 likes this hot stuff! All shooting was done from 25 paces, so close to 25 yards I would say. Not too bad. I think I will save some propellant and lower the charge a smidge … My shooting hand might thank me in my older age! Do yourself a favor and go watch the video on carrying handguns in the mountains on the “The Pearce Brothers” YouTube channel. Lots of interesting information there. Better yet, support them on Patreon! NOTE TO SELF: Work harder on double action shooting!!! by @firearm_legacies
My uberti 1875 Remington chambered in 45 Colt. This one is special as it was worked over by my friend Mike from Goons Gun Works. He installed an action stop, bolt block, coil hand spring, coil bolt/trigger springs, retimed the action, and tuned all the parts for longevity and reliability. The Remington 1875 really works well for me and my hand shape/size. This one shoots very well if I do my part. #singleactionshootingsociety #Remington1875 #colt saa #45colt by @firearm_legacies
The West was wild once upon a time. Colorful characters on horseback or on foot traveled the width and length of Wyoming - The Cowboy State. Take a walk on the “wild side” every now and then, far back into the backcountry, where there are no people, no 4 wheelers, no off-road trucks, just you, nature and history. If you have a keen eye, you might find yourself holding some of that history in your hands. Pictured here are items that makes Wyoming such an interesting state to walk in. Packing a 45 Colt SAA and a wartime Winchester 1894 30WCF rifle, you feel part of that rich history. The Indian Head cent is dated 1873, a famous year for firearms, two 45-70 casings, a 38-55 casing and yes, a 30WCF (30-30) casing, a 45-70 lead bullet, a musket bullet (???), two spoons and a fork, three stone arrowheads and a few very old rusty nails. Treasures ALL! I encourage you to go out in backcountry and explore! You will never see nature the same again when you are standing in the middle of a teepee ring … Your mind will run CRAZY! Who, what, where, when??? by @firearm_legacies
Sometimes you just HAVE TO create the image in your mind. This is a 1911 in 45ACP that was put together by myself with the picture of a “custom” pistol from the 1930s-1950s as a guide. Those vintage pistols literally cost a small fortune and as such, only a few of the brave owners will shoot them. Well, I shoot guns so I created this one. It has a “kind of” vintage look but is a modern gun put together with modern parts, to include a Colt MKIV Series 70 slide complete with the famous pony. And man does she shoot! The frame and internals are pure Tisas ASF. All the parts of this pistol are hand fit. The gun is tight! A fun project that shoots fantastic! What are YOU putting together? by @firearm_legacies
One of my favorite Old West revolvers is the Remington 1875, 1888 and 1890 revolvers. Introduced in 1875 it was the first Remington revolver built from the ground up as a cartridge revolver with bored through chambers. Initially offered in the proprietary 44 Remington cartridge, the 44-40 was soon offered as the standard chambering. A few, possibly only 6, were made in 45 Colt as well. The Remington gained a reputation as a sturdy and trustworthy revolver, through accuracy was lacking in the 44-40 chambering as the throat dimensions were grossly oversized in the .448 to .450 range. Regardless, a number of notable individuals carried the Remington through part or all of their lives on the frontier. Two notable individuals are Frank James and Fredrick Russell Burnham. All told about 30,000 guns were made total between all three models. All the revolvers shown in the photo are modern replicas made by Uberti. Unlike the original 44 wcf guns these Ubertis all shoot extremely well. The nickel plated is one of my favorite sixguns I own. by @firearm_legacies
What were the “had to have” guns when you were a youngster? These two were the absolute “must haves” when I was 15 or so. I read everything I could find written by Elmer Keith and Jeff Cooper. The guns were inspired by those two. First, a S&W Model 29 in 44 Magnum and of course a Colt Government Model Series 70 in 45ACP. I bought a Colt Government Model immediately after my military service, a 1979 manufactured beauty, brand new in the box. Never got to buy a Model 29 back then. Fast forward to 2002. I had emigrated to the US and soon enough I had claimed ownership of a brand new in the box Colt Government Model 45ACP and a few years later I was blessed with a S&W Model 29-2 44 Magnum as a “thank you” gift! So now I own and cherish these fine handguns. Yes, that 1979 Colt is still unfired … 😎 by @firearm_legacies
