Sometimes you got to pop out and show out. Blessed and highly favored.

Today, on Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality in America.

As a firefighter-paramedic, I’m especially proud to honor the legacy of Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh—the first modern paramedics in the United States. Long before EMS became what it is today, a group of African American men and women pioneered emergency medical care, saving lives and laying the foundation for the profession I serve in today.

Their story is a powerful reminder that Black Americans have not only fought for freedom but have also helped build and strengthen the institutions that serve all of us.

This Juneteenth, we remember the past, celebrate progress, and commit ourselves to creating a future where opportunity, dignity, and justice are available to everyone.

I’m standing on this for the foreseeable future. If it ain’t got nothing to do with me and mines, keep me out of it.

For some people, this is a job and for other people this is a calling. Happy National First Responders Day.

It’s hard to find the right words to express how I’m feeling about the passing of my good friend and fellow firefighter, Austin Hodge. I didn’t want to rush to make a post because, honestly, I needed time to collect my thoughts and process the fact that he’s really gone.

Austin and I go way back. We first crossed paths working at the Boys & Girls Club when I was a senior in high school and he was just a freshman. Who would’ve thought that all these years later, we’d both find ourselves serving our communities in the fire service? From those early days at the Boys & Girls Club to becoming brothers in the fire service, it’s been incredible watching the young man I knew grow into the man and firefighter he became.

One of the things that makes this even harder to process is knowing that Austin had already experienced the unimaginable pain of losing his brother. And now, here we are, having to say goodbye to him too. Life can be so incredibly unfair, and moments like this remind us just how precious and fragile it truly is.

If you knew Austin, you knew his ENERGY. That positive energy, that smile, and the way he carried himself are things I will NEVER, EVER forget. Some people have a way of making the world around them a little brighter just by being in it, and Austin was one of those people.

As a firefighter, you understand the risks that come with this profession. But nothing truly prepares you for losing one of your own, especially someone you’ve known since you were kids.

My heart goes out to Austin’s family, his friends, his brothers and sisters at St. Lucie County Fire District, and everyone whose life he touched.

While my heart is heavy, I find some comfort in believing that Austin is finally reunited with his brother. Two brothers together again.

Rest easy, my brother. Thank you for the memories, the friendship, the laughs, and the positive energy you brought into this world.

From the Boys & Girls Club to the firehouse, I’ll always be grateful our paths crossed.

I’ll never forget you, Austin Hodge. Until we meet again, brother.

🇺🇸 United We Remember 🇺🇸

This day was about more than 3.43 miles.

Firefighters, first responders, families and community members came together to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, honor those who answered the call and stand together 25 years later.

The 3.43-mile distance carries a special meaning, honoring the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice that day. Along the route, neighbors waved, drivers honked and volunteers cheered participants on every step of the way.

It was privilege to participate in this event with my neighbors here in St. Lucie County, FL

Twenty-five years later, we remember together.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

“You can’t hide that shark pride.“ 20 years ago I was in the same room preparing for my senior year in high school and last year high school football. So today was a full circle moment for me to be able to come back and speak to the team.

The life lessons that I learned on the field are lessons that I carry with me today. The things I left with those young men were never give up, be coachable, and know whatever work you put into the things you want will be what you get in return.

Thank you again for the invitation. It felt good to be home.

It’s an honor to be asked to come and speak where it all started. The lessons I learned and the bonds I built at Sebastian River High School, have lasted til this day. Best high school on the Treasure Coast.

Yesterday, was International Firefighters Day, I’m reflecting on the honor of serving six years on the front lines.

This job has shown me the best of humanity in the hardest moments, neighbors helping neighbors, strangers becoming family, and the quiet courage it takes to run toward danger when others are running away.

Being a firefighter isn’t just what I do, it’s part of who I am. It’s long nights, missed holidays, and moments that stay with you forever. But it’s also purpose, pride, and a commitment to serve something bigger than yourself.

Stay safe. Stay ready. And never forget why we answer the call.
