Fleming College is once again on Canada’s Top Research Colleges list, and this year we've risen to 17th place!

Research Infosource Inc. released its annual rankings today, showing Fleming’s big jump up from number 31 to number 17.

What powered this rise? Industry partners are investing in Fleming’s applied research at unprecedented levels. Fleming is now ranked number 1 among medium-sized Canadian colleges for Industry Research Income Growth. Companies are choosing to put more of their own funding into our applied research projects, and that reflects a high level of confidence in our researchers, centres, and faculty expertise.

Huge thanks to our partners, our researchers, and the outstanding teams at the Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies (CAWT), the Centre for Applied Machine Intelligence & Integration Technologies (CAMIIT), the Centre for Innovative Aquaculture Production (CIAP), the Office of Applied Research and Innovation (OARI), and the many faculty-led projects across the college. This climb speaks to meaningful innovation, measurable impact, and strong community trust.

Here’s to continued collaboration and continued momentum in the years ahead.

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘁? 🦈

Luckily, CAMIIT can help with that.

While Moose the 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗴 might be stealing the spotlight as a shark this Halloween, the team at @flemingcollege’s 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 (CAMIIT) is making waves in a different way.

We’re a $7 million applied research lab specializing in 𝗔𝗜, 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 — helping businesses secure research funding, solve real-world challenges, and scale innovative ideas.

We take our applied research seriously… even if our Halloween costumes say otherwise.

𝗦𝘂𝗻, 𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀!

We braved the heat yesterday for our annual 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 and it was totally worth it. From lawn games to laughter, grilled goodies to great company, it was a perfect chance to unwind and reconnect.

Huge thanks to Marc for owning the grill, and to Lisa for planning such a fantastic gathering. It’s not every day all three of our research centres get together, so when we do, it’s something special.

To everyone who played, ate, chatted, and showed up: thank you. Time shared is always time well spent.

Bird-window collisions pose a serious conservation challenge, but applied research at Fleming College’s Frost Campus is proving that small, 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁.

In 2022, Professor @thomluloff received funding through Fleming College’s internal research grant program, iGRO, to assess the effectiveness of window markers in reducing bird strikes on campus. Partnering with @featherfriendly, 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿 of bird-safe window markers, the project installed their product at Auk’s Lodge, making it the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱-𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 in the Kawartha Lakes region.

Students played a key role in the research, monitoring window strikes during peak migration seasons. In 449 person-hours of research involving 93 students, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀. However, collisions continued on untreated surfaces, reinforcing the need for broader implementation.

This work didn’t go unnoticed—it contributed to the City of Kawartha Lakes earning 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 certification in 2024, and student researchers were named 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 for their efforts.

What’s next? A new funding proposal has been submitted to a federal granting agency to expand monitoring efforts beyond the campus, with a decision expected soon.
