After managing to scrape together money to pay for an abortion, filmmaker Julia Mellen decides to celebrate with a party. In attendance are her geriatric ska musician neighbour, semi-retired gang affiliates, her gay roommate, and ever-present bedbugs.

Screening at @goshort as part of the International Competition as well as the “Late Night: Weird Animation” programme, Mellen’s ABORTION PARTY is “wildly funny, but also painfully relevant.”

Tonight, @decockbrecht’s 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘦. will be screened as part of “Rubbing Shoulders”, a collaboration between @pilarbrussels and @luci.collective. For this third edition, De Cock curated a programme that also includes works by @anouk_de_clercq and Len Lye—a screening that takes the simplest of shapes and allows them to dance, scale, and flesh out familiar and unfamiliar universes.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between De Cock and artist-curator Anouk De Clercq and will address their overlapping practices in animation, digital technologies, and sound.

Tomorrow, @kaskcinema is screening 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘴, as part of “Through the Art of Detour”, a programme focusing on anthropology and film. In KASK lecturer and filmmaker An van Dienderen’s film, Carly Wijs translates a news bulletin about young Japanese people resisting a grueling work ethic from their bedrooms.

Carly’s wonder at what she translates resonates. Soothing, childlike, and letting things take their course. Softly spoken words blossom. Hikikomori. Furita. Their letters dance across Carly’s lips until they transcend their negative connotations.

A discussion with the filmmakers in attendance will follow the screening. Read more via kortfilm.be/agenda!

🚗 James Benning and Bette Gordon’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 (1975) is on display this weekend at @smakgent as part of @filmfestgent’s retrospectives. One of the major works of the structuralist film movement of the 1970s, the film is a richly revealing portrait of Vietnam-era America as seen through the windshield of the filmmakers’ car while on a road trip from New York to Los Angeles.

“A road movie in the purest sense. To the rhythm of Benning and Gordon’s silent journey through New York, Chicago, the Rocky Mountains, Las Vegas, and other locations, they show a North America that looks much more sober than the bombastic image we are used to seeing of the country. Their USA feels calmer, almost anti-American,” writes Flo Vanhorebeek.

From the bottom of my heart: thank you so much to everyone who bought a ticket, left a donation, participated in our silly auction, drank our lemonade and ate our food. Because of your help and contributions, ‘Mongiano’ is off to a good start 🖤

With that in mind: given the ongoing genocide in Palestine, I had a lot of mixed feelings about starting this fundraiser, because the money would ultimately be used for something so trivial. As communicated earlier, a small sum of €200 will therefore go to @brussels4palestine . I want to preach what I pray, so I am donating €100 from my own money as well.

With love and Free Palestine,
Flo 💚 by @flo.vanhorebeek

A baby what now!?

Yes, you read that right. On September 19th and 20th, I’m hosting my very own baby shower in Brussels to raise funds for my new film ‘Mongiano’. A three-in-one party, as I’ll also be celebrating my official name change and 28th birthday!

On these days, I’ll take you behind the scenes of all my previous film works through an interactive presentation where I’ll auction (some rather silly) memorabilia used in these projects. No Sotheby’s prices, though. Everyone gets a fair chance at taking something home.

Other than that: there will be drinks, food, music and post cards for sale, or a chance to leave a donation. A percentage of the funds raised will go to Brussels for Palestine.

Reserve your spot in the link below. A ticket to the event also buys you full access to watch all six films online!

I hope you’ll join ! 💐

Nieuw interview!

— Brecht Vanhoutte
